Permian Extinction

Scientist's Theories!

Acid Rain and Volcanic Gases

Paleobiologist Cindy Looy believes in this theory. Unfortunately there is not enough evidence to prove this theory. This cause the decaying of trees and resulted in lots of forms of fungi.

Professor Gregory Retallack believes in this theory. He says the explosion sent particles into the air which was then released back down to the earth on land and water through rain. His evidence was the findings of quartz crystals made by the large impact and a large crater in Australia.

There is not enough evidence found for scientists to have one solid theory as to why the Permian Extinction happened.

Under the Sea

Geologists Paul Wignall and Richard Twitchett believe the cause is from under the sea. There was no oxygen under the water during the permian. The water killed off all the organisms.
