Teacher of the Year Nominations!
The Walled Lake Consolidated Schools are again participating in a program to honor exemplary teachers. We hope you will join us in an effort that will result in the selection of the TEACHER/EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR for the Walled Lake Consolidated School District at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. This honor will be bestowed at our January 11, 2018 school board meeting.
Each school building will select a teacher of the year and that person’s name will be submitted to the district committee for final selection. We are requesting that this form be returned to Glengary NO LATER THAN MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2017.
Please nominate one of our phenomenal teachers here: Teacher of the Year Nominations

Halloween is a busy day at Glengary. Our staff cannot apply face make up for children. Please also be sure to send your child's costume to school with them as they will change at school. Your cooperation and support is appreciated!
At 11:00 a.m., our parade will begin. For the parade, we will meet all parents out on the playground. We will parade on the track directly behind the school.
If the weather is inclement, we will parade inside. If we have to do that, we ask that K-2 parents wait on the inside area of the large gym and grades 3-5 parents wait on the inside area of the cafeteria for us. We will walk along the perimeter of these rooms. Our halls are narrow; so if possible, please do not bring strollers on this day.
As in the past, we ask that parents car pool whenever possible. Weather permitting, our playground will be open for parking. If you must park on Woodbury, please park on the east side of the street only. Double parking along Woodbury makes it very challenging for buses and fire trucks to come down the street, and we also want to be good neighbors to the people that live along Woodbury.

Third-Grade Reading Retention Law
Being a good reader is critical for children to be successful in school. In 2017, the Michigan Legislature implemented the Third Grade Reading Law to ensure that students exit third-grade reading at or above grade level, which will impact the current 2017-2018 first-grade students by the time they are in third-grade.
In accordance with this law, and as a means of better informing classroom instruction, districts will be providing K-3 reading assessments to students across the state. These assessments will identify students who need intensive reading instruction and intervention, and will also provide useful information to help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual student needs.
- Letter from Walled Lake Schools on Reading Retention Law.
- The law also requires districts to provide early and regular written communication with parents of K-3 students with reading difficulties. Communication will include information about current services being provided, additional reading supports planned for your child, and a read-at-home plan for you to help your child at home.
- Reading Retention Michigan House Bill No. 4822
- I-Ready Reading Assessment that Walled Lake has been utilizing the past three years.
- K-3 literacy instruction in Walled Lake, includes this the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy booklet.

Reflections
Is your child a budding artist? If so, we have three upcoming Saturday workshops provided by Young Rembrandts - The Power of Drawing! Your child will learn the following in each two-hour workshop (1:30pm-3:30pm):
Workshop One #F17205: “Monsters, Creatures and Creeps”
This is a great character building exercise and a fun opportunity to draw different facial expressions. We will draw monsters of different shapes, sizes, and colors. The students will carefully analyze the monsters' faces. The exaggerated facial features amplify our characters' personalities and emotions.
Workshop Two #F17206: “Fashion and Fanciful Flowers”
This workshop is inspired by fashion magazines, flowers, makeup accessories, and portrait photography. Students will explore different concepts through fashion-themed imagery. These beautiful drawings offer a fun, yet sophisticated style. We will examine colorful patterns, intricate line work, and compositional layout. The students will draw a variety of flowers, faces, hairdos, and accessories.
Workshop Three #F17207: “Favorite Apps and Video Game Art”
Students will create their own stylized characters that are inspired by iconic video games. These drawings offer different styles from pixel-inspired imagery to action-packed cartoons. The students will draw unique characters of all shapes, sizes, and designs. This provides excellent practice for drawing dynamic characters and exploring pop culture.

Does your child like to doodle and draw cartoons? We have an upcoming Cartooning Workshop with artist Neal Levin on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 7:00pm-8:30pm.
This class will teach children to draw cartoons through simple instruction and games. Students will learn how to make up their own cartoons! The curriculum for this class is revised each year and students will receive a new packet of cartoons for free!
