WM 1st Grade Curriculum Update
December 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
During the month of December we will continue to read and learn about all things non-fiction! We will study the text features of non-fiction books and work on our fluency and expression. To end our unit, we’ll practice reading aloud our books like reporters!
Writing
This month, we are writing non-fiction chapter books! We’re using everything we know to teach others all about a chosen topic. We’re working on adding more detail; making sure the reader has enough information to understand the topic. We're looking forward to seeing you at our Starbooks Cafe on December 19!
Phonics
This month, we'll focus on reading across all of our words. We'll pay attention to word endings (y, ed, ing), contractions and continue to grow our snap word repertoire.
Math
Our focus this month will be a continuation of single digit addition and subtraction. We’ll use number racks to help us understand doubles and even and odd numbers. We will also continue learning how to apply our knowledge through story problems.
During Number Corner, we will start to explore 3D shapes and continue to work on time to the hour.
Science
Social Studies
This month, we’ll focus on kindness towards one another. We’ll also celebrate the many different holidays around the world.
LMC - Library
In December, first graders will be exploring books with themes of winter and snow. We’ll work with both fiction and nonfiction. Our first graders are now experts on nonfiction, so this is a great chance for them to put their classroom learning to work in the library!
Music
We are so excited to share all of our students’ hard work at our WINTER TEA AND TUNES in the Gym on December 12th. Students’ performance times can be found on the invitations they made, the bulletin board outside of the music room, and in the PTO newsletters that have gone home. We hope you are able to join us!
After Winter Tea is completed, we will be watching our performances and reflecting on our wonderful work.
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be having their Winter Music Sharing Days on Friday the 13th, Monday the 16th, and Tuesday the 17th. Look for more information to come home closer to the dates!
Technology
Students will identify and explore features of an informational website. Students will evaluate whether they like or dislike features of a website. Students will participate in Hour of Code, which is an introduction to computer science. It is designed to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
Art
Why do artists make self-portraits? How do artists improve? What are some art careers? (Self-Portrait as a Superhero)
PE
We are starting our Gymnastics unit. Which will include tumbling, balance and apparatus skills. We will also play Holiday games and create the annual “maze.”
Guidance
We are continuing our Empathy Unit. Students are learning more about feelings, how feelings can change and noticing similarities and differences in how we each feel about things. We are also practicing what to do if you do something on accident. We practice saying three steps; "I'm sorry, it was an accident, are you ok?"
