Counselor's Corner
What Do School Counselors Do?
Many friends have often asked, “What exactly do you do as a counselor at school?” As adults, we often think about our school counselor when we were in high school. I know I only saw my counselor maybe 4 times over the four years I was there. Long gone are those days.
School counselors serve a mighty purpose of helping “students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow” (https://www.schoolcounselor.org/administrators/role-of-the-school-counselor.aspx).
School counselors can assist students as they work at discovering their academic talents and abilities. Many times we often hear students say, “I can’t,” when, with the right tools, they can. Counselors can collect information from the teachers and parents to help students choose appropriate courses for their future careers or college major(s). School counselors can also help students with organizational strategies and study tips. For example, the BHS Counseling Center website is a great resource.
Over the next few weeks, we will continue to take a look at how a school counselor partners with parents and students to help them reach their goals.

Optimist Club of Fort Worth Essay
How to Submit Your Essay Entries by Email
Some of you may have recevied an earlier email today with incorrect information about scholarship awards for the Optimist Club of Fort Worth. This email is updated and contains current scholarship information.
The definitive rules which control the validity of submissions are those of Optimist International, which you will find on your application form at http://www.optimist.org/Forms/Essay_RULES_PAD-E_16-17.pdf.
Here at Optimist Club of Fort Worth, we expect a wave of submissions in advance of the entry deadline, 5 p.m. Feburary 10, 2017. This year we are accepting entries by email, and we encourage you to submit in this manner. If you choose to submit your entries by email, the following guidelines will help our essay judges:
1. Examine each application to make sure the application is complete, including the student’s email contact information, DOB, and handwritten signature of a parent. The sponsoring club number is 38170.
2. Scan the application and the essay as a single PDF document. The completed application is the first page of your scan. The title page of the student’s work is page 2, and the content of the essay follows.
3. Name the scan with the student’s name. For example, if the student is John Doe, we suggest you name the PDF scan as Doe_John.pdf.
4. Address email entries to essaycontest@optimistclubfortworth.org.
5. You may submit multiple essays in a single email. Each essay with application should be submitted as a single PDF document. Please be aware that many email servers have limitations as to data capacity. As a general rule of thumb, when attachments reach the 10 MB level, it is useful practice to halt your attachments and start a new email for the next batch. We have found that we can usually accept up to 10 essays in a single email.
6. If you want assurance that your email was timely received, use the “Request a Delivery Receipt” option in your email application. This is how it looks in Microsoft Outlook:
The Board of Directors of Optimist Club of Fort Worth has noted the good response from Fort Worth area schools this year, and has determined that scholarship awards for essay winners at our local club level will be made for winning entries in the amounts of $1000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. The first place winner at the local level will be eligible for district competition, where a solo additional first place scholarship award shall be conferred by Optimist International, in the amount of $2500.
You may also submit by regular mail to Optimist Club of Fort Worth, Essay Contest, P.O. Box 101163, Fort Worth, TX 76185.
Late-received entries cannot be considered.
