What a great week!!
Oregon State Teacher of the Year!!
Tuesday this week were were excited to hold a surprise assembly to honor our very own teacher Keri Pilgrim Ricker, as the Oregon’s 2019 Teacher of the Year! Governor Kate Brown and Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Colt Gill announced the award in the gym.
Keri teaches and coordinates health sciences in Churchill's CTE Health Services Pathway. She was chosen for the state's top teacher award for her passionate leadership and tireless advocacy for students. With a background in biology, ecology and animal science, Keri guides her students through a customized curriculum rooted in inquiry and real-world application. She believes that collaboration is essential for educational transformation.
"I believe education to be a partnership formed between students, educators and the community," Keri said. “We all must take a seat at the table and support one another in meaningful ways to create a sustainable, holistic and dynamic educational model.” As for herself and the many other teachers deserving of honors, Keri told the students at the assembly, "We wake up every morning and do this hard work because we want you to be successful and be your best selves, even when it's hard."

We couldn't be prouder of Keri and this recognition. She will be a wonderful representative for all the amazingly talented teachers in our district and our state.
Thank you, Keri—and all of our terrific teachers and staff—for your excellence and dedication to improving the lives of our community's children.
In The Know
Churchill Volunteers - Our AVID program is looking for tutors for all subjects. Tutoring opportunities are available during 1st period (8:30 to approximately 9:45) Monday through Thursday. A weekly commitment is preferred. Contact Ian Ogden for more information at ogden_i@4j.lane.edu.
Open House - This is a big night and an important event for our families. We look forward to sharing with each family on this evening. In addition to meeting with community organizations, school clubs and student unions, you will also have the opportunity to purchase Churchill Swag, learn about Churchill's overarching vision, systems of support, and general organization. All families are encouraged to print their students schedule and bring it with you to Open House. If you are not able to we will happily provide a schedule to you. The second half of our program will provide time to visit each of your students classes and learn about their classes. Things you will learn more about include:
- Class size - It can be helpful to know what the size of your students class looks like. It helps provide understanding what your child's class environment looks like.
- What will students learn? You may want to know what it is that their child will be learning in each class. This is your chance to learn why each class is important.
- Communication - You will be able to learn how how your child's teacher will communicate with you. This is a great opportunity to learn about email, voicemail, Synergy, ParentVue, office hours, etc.
- Academic Support - You will also want to know where your kids can go for help if they are struggling. Office hours, support opportunities, interventions built into the instruction, etc.
- We will not discuss individual student grades at Open House - This will automatically send deviate a teachers attention away from the true objective of the evening and take away the opportunity for other parents to learn more about the class. Please do not to engage teachers in discussion about your individual students and their grades. I encourage separate appointments.
- Syllabus - You will be able to receive the class syllabus. These will be printed out, sent by email, and/or posted on a website. They should be overtly easy to access.

Exchange Students - If you are interested in studying abroad or hosting an exchange student, Churchill High School is holding an information meeting on Monday, September 24th at 7:00pm in the Library. Rotary Youth Exchange is a program that sends high school students for a year of study abroad to learn a new culture and create international understanding. They attend high school and stay with Host Families (usually 3 during the school year). The goal is to help them learn a new culture and language, and to create “young ambassadors” who will contribute to international understanding during the rest of their lives.
AVID Volunteers - We are looking for volunteers to join our AVID classes who are going to visit the UO on Monday October 1st, 2018. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about our AVID program and help support our students. All four AVID classes will attend the college fair and tour and meet with various campus groups including the Center for Equity and Diversity and Admissions/Financial Aid and to hear about scholarships and entrance information. This is a full day opportunity. You do need to be an approved volunteer with 4J. If interested please contact Jill Reents at 541-790-5100.
