Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of June: REFLECTIONS & TRANSITIONS
Reflection is also a great tool and resource that allows us to transition successfully. I wish each of you an effortless transition to your well deserved summer vacation and a successful transition to the opening of school in September.
Remember, be BRAVE enough to be kind and have the courage to care!
#Peruenemergencia
On April 28th, the Jericho Middle School community came together to show our support of recent victims of the flooding and mudslides in the coastal desert region of Peru. The Spanish classes under the support of Sras. Bolton, Vidal, and Waters organized a Mercado Peruano. The front lobby of the school was converted into a Peruvian marketplace complete with authentic Peruvian bracelets and doll pins for sale, games, a photo booth in front of Machu Picchu, raffle prizes, a tasting table with empanadas and Inka Cola, and a Wall of Hope where students and staff wrote messages of hope to the people of Peru impacted by this natural disaster. There was also a video playing throughout the event created by 8th grader Jake Cohen. In one day, we raised $1800 which was donated to CARE Perú. Eighth grade Spanish students had the opportunity to video chat with Milo Stanojevich, the National Director of CARE Perú, who updated us on the situation there and informed us that the money we donated would be used to provide temporary housing for two families who lost their homes. Students involved in the preparation and execution of this service-learning project showed such spirit, as witnessed by their active learning, great leadership, and careful reflection. Thank you to the Jericho community for your generosity.
Summer Tips from the World Language Department!
- Taco Tuesday, Tortellini Thursday, Fromage Friday, Szechwan Saturday- Choose a dedicated night each week to explore foods from the language and cultures your child is studying about. You can cook together at home or try the various restaurants on Long Island and NYC.
- Think globally, travel locally. Can’t take a faraway trip this summer? No worries, you do not have to go far to experience different cultures. Chinatown, Little Italy, Little Paris, and Spanish Harlem are just a few spots in NYC where you can hear Chinese, French, Italian, and Spanish, shop in authentic grocery stores, and interact with people while using your language skills.
- Music is the international language, and summertime is a great time to pack a picnic and take advantage of free concerts in parks on Long Island along the waterfront in NYC.
We have so enjoyed having your children in our classes this year and we are proud of how much they have developed their language skills and cultural appreciation. Wishing you all a fun and relaxing summer!
- Ms. Bolton, Ms. Gangidino, Ms. Guo, Ms. Mueller, Ms. Vidal, and Ms. Waters
Classroom News!
Team 6A:
As we tread down the end of the school year yellow brick road the students have been engaged in both academics and team building activities! We celebrated the Sixth Grade Mini Olympics followed by our Annual Sixth Grade Fishing Trip. Then the students entertained the incoming Fifth Grade with their expertise on how to acclimate to Jericho Middle School in this video; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otSDz4-ZSpM&t=2s Worth a watch! #SoProud! In math, we are working on Measures of Central Tendency and Data Displays. In science, we will begin working on compounds and mixtures…so much more fun to be had! In Social Studies, we have been diving into our Silk Road research project and learning how to properly cite our sources. In ELA, we have been learning about Greek Mythology and are currently following the exciting adventures of Odysseus while reading Homer's "The Odyssey." We also made a vocabulary video for Unit 11 -- watch it at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv8B-9RBNGA
Team 6B:
Recently, Team 6B spent time separating mixtures in science. We used hand sorting, attraction, filtering, and evaporation to take heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures apart. It was a little more work, but we were up to the challenge of separating compounds as well. We were able to hear the presence of Hydrogen when we separated water, and we were able to touch and see carbon after separating sugar. Our senses of smell were also used... Some thought we experienced a lovely scent, and others disagreed. Ask your children!
Team 6C:
Team 6C practiced scientific method skills and were introduced statistics concepts through an exciting STEM project. Students brought in raw materials from home (bottle caps, coins, metal washers, nuts and bolts, cardboard, plastic etc) and were giving one ball bearing per group. With these materials, they made their own fidget spinners. After fidget spinners were constructed, students collected and analyzed data to determine which of the student-made spinners would spin the longest. Students then reflected on how to improve their spinners to increase the spin length.
Team 6D:
Team 6E:
Team 6E went fishing and had an awesome time. We overcame the elements to enjoy an exciting day out at sea. The BOCES naturalists dredged some interesting creatures from the bottom of the Long Island Sound and we had a chance to examine those creatures up close and personal; crabs, mud snails, sea urchins, and spider crabs.
Teams 7A, 7B & 7C
On Wednesday, June 7, the 7th grade student body will be holding a fundraiser to raise money for a very worthy organization, Water For South Sudan. This organization was founded by Salva Dut, one of the Lost Boys of the Sudan. Salva was the central character in the novel read in class, A Long Walk to Water. Please support our cause! Team 8A:
After viewing scenes from the movie Twister, Team 8A Earth Science students are working together to find the epicenter of an earthquake.
Team 8B:
Students on Team 8B have been investigating Pythagoras' theorem. They cut out the areas of the two smaller squares and situated the pieces to fill the largest square to reinforce the relationship. Students remember information better and can better recall it when it is represented and learned both visually and verbally.
Team 8C:
8C students just finished reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. Although the diary was written during World War II, students found Anne's musings about friends, school, love, and parents to be remarkably similar to the conversations they have with their own friends. Students learned about Anne's daily life in the Secret Annex and the many challenges and fears she experienced. Students also learned about D-Day as they read Anne's excited and hopeful entry about when the Allied soldiers landed on Normandy beaches. On the eve of Memorial weekend, students were then asked to reflect on the meaning of the holiday.
Tips from the School Nurse!
The Hazy, Hot, and Humid days of Summer are right around the corner. Everyone will want to cool off…maybe at the beach,a water park, a pool or a lake. Let’s review some Summer Water Safety Tips…
Supervision- Instruct your child to never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy and have them avoid areas that aren’t supervised by a trained lifeguard.
Swim Lessons- It is advised that children over four years of age learn to swim. They should take lessons from a certified swim instructor. (Mom and Dad should take lessons as well if they can’t swim.)
Body Temperature- Children should get out of the water if they feel cold or start shivering. Body temperature drops much more quickly in water therefore making yor child suseptible to hypothermia.
Personal Floatation Devices- Your child must be wearing the life jacket for it to work. Make it a habit for everyone to wear a life jacket when boating, kayaking or using a jet ski.
Here’s a Review of Tips for Staying Healthy in the Summer Heat:
-Stay Hydrated-Drink Plenty of Water.
-Apply sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses to protect from the sun’s UVA/UVB rays.
Remember to have fun and enjoy the Summer!
