News from our Nurse...
Dear Chinook Families:
Head lice have remained a problem in the schools even after all the separation done during the pandemic. Control of head lice depends on prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. Your help in inspecting your child at least weekly throughout the school year for the presence of head lice would be greatly appreciated.
I suggest the following procedure for inspecting your child for head lice:
- Under a bright light begin looking at the back of the head just above the neck area.
- Part the hair section by section and look closely for head lice or nits (eggs).
- Mature lice, which are no bigger than a sesame seed, avoid light and are hard to see. Nits or eggs appear as tiny whitish ovals that are “glued” to the hair shaft. They cannot easily be flicked away as dandruff can.
If you find head lice on your child, please notify the school and others that may have been exposed and promptly treat. If your child has been exposed, be aware that it might take a few weeks or a month before an infestation is established enough to be easily seen. So keep checking!
Please be assured we are doing what we can to control head lice here at Chinook:
- ASD’s Head Lice Policy is being followed.
- Known cases are followed up on to insure proper, effective treatment.
- Sharing of hats and personal items are discouraged.
- Itchy heads and scratching are investigated.
Two great sources for additional information and treatment recommendations are: www.headlice.org
www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head
Feel free to call with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your help and support.
Sincerely,
Kelly Smith, RN
