Course Information

Quarter 1 TGAs were due on September 16th. We are continuing to learn about informational text, text features, and main idea. We are reading from the magazine "Emoji and Pisa and Birds, Oh My!" This can be found in your K12 Curriculum and online in Unit 2, Lesson 1 (part 7) of the OLS.

Big picture

We kicked off our second math unit! We are focusing on multiplication. One of our 4th grade goals is to master 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication and 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.

The OLS structures lessons to start with the area model of multiplication, partial product multiplication, and then the standard algorithm.

"Area model multiplication gives students another way to visualize a math equation, which is extremely valuable. Not all kids (or adults) think in the same way. When you give them more ways to approach a math problem, they're more likely to succeed. More importantly, the area model method helps students understand how math works. And as the equations they solve become more complicated, the purpose behind area models becomes much more clear." -Jill Staake from We Are Teachers

Our goal is to expose our students to multiple methods, so they can find the one that works best for them.

Encourage your student to master their math facts! Practice a few minutes each day. Learning them now will save lots of frustration when we get to double digit multiplication and fractions.

Foreign Language

If you are enrolled in a foreign language course (Spanish, French, or German), the due dates are incorrect in the OLS. Please reference the calendars below for the lessons to complete each week.

Please remember that Seesaw is not optional. We are completing activities on there that are for a grade. Please log in regularly to see what assignments you have. Your student should have their log-in information but reach out to your homeroom teacher if you need it again.

Typing Practice

Several student have asked for good sites to practice their typing. The OLS recommends these sites:

OVCA Clubs

Are you interested in joining a club through OVCA? Click the link below to find out more about the clubs the school offers.

Newrow Audio and Video test

You can click the link below to go and test your mic and webcam before entering a Newrow session. This will help eliminate some problems before you enter a class.

Media Release Form

OVCA is focused on providing a safe virtual learning environment. With this in mind, we ask that a legal guardian complete the below survey for each student enrolled with OVCA. The media release form includes two sections: Photograph, Testimonial and Interview Release, and Face to Face Platform (webcam) Usage School-Guardian-Student Compact. You will be given the choice to accept or decline each opportunity.

Together we can help students reach their full potential through personalized learning this year! Thank you for taking the time to complete this form.
