Timber Wolf Times
News for TMS Families Week of April 3, 2022
Dear Trailside Families,
Happy spring to all of our families! As we enter the last week of the third marking period and spring break; I want to encourage each of our students to have a strong finish. We are looking forward to more days for outdoor eating and consistent pack time outdoors! We do have an increase of students walking, riding bikes, and skateboards. Please be extra cautious when you are dropping off students as our pedestrian traffic has increased.
I am sorry to share with you that we have had increasing cases of students using foul language both in and out of class, at lunch, and on the buses. The use of foul language has a negative impact on the positive and inclusive climate we strive to provide for each student.
Last week in the resource talks with students, deans have reminded the students of language expectations and that parents will be called regarding the use of foul language. We appreciate your support as we partner to grow the best version of each of our students.
Ramadan begins this week and I want to assure parents and students that we have set aside quiet space for students to go to during lunch. Students may go to the library and/or any house office or main office conference area for a quiet space.
All my best,
Bridget M. Beichler
LOST AND FOUND
Phone, Ear Buds, and Head Phones
Ear pods and headphones are very popular and also expensive. We are experiencing an increase of students wearing ear pods during the day and connecting to their phones. We are also having more students reporting lost ear pods. We will be speaking with students about the expectation of head phones and ear pods should only be used in the classroom for specific instructional activities. We appreciate your supporting our expectations.
Trailside is Redesignated as a Schools to Watch
What is Schools To Watch?
In 1999, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform began a national program to identify high-performing middle grades schools. The Schools To Watch program recognizes academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes in middle level education. The Commonwealth of Virginia joined the Schools to Watch program in 2003.
Part of our application team, attended the Virginia Middle School Association Conference where Trailside Middle School was recognized for being re-designated as a School to Watch!
What’s Happening in the Library?
April is School Library Month as well as Earth month and we have many activities planned in our library. We will be kicking off the month in our makerspace area with make your own bookmarks and paper beads out of books that have been discarded due to damage or missing pages. By using these discarded books we are promoting the reusing and recycling of materials.
The genre of the month is Fantasy. Books in this genre tell stories about events or characters that do not exist in the real world. Some popular Fantasy books in our library are the Wings of Fire series, Harry Potter series, The Land of Stories series as well as The Red Queen series.
We are still in need of beads or rainbow loom supplies and welcome donations of any of those items. We have also created a Trailside Library Wishlist on Amazon for anyone who would like to purchase and donate.
We are excited to announce that we have secured an author visit to occur in June with April Henry the author of many YA mystery books such as: Girl Stolen, Count All Her Bones, and The Body in the Woods. We are in the process of locating a vendor so that students who are interested can purchase some of Ms. Henry’s books before her visit. Ms. Henry will be available for book signings throughout the day. More details will be shared as final arrangements are made.
Please ask your student to look around their bedroom, locker, or backpack and return any library books that they may have. We will be sending out overdue notices soon as we try to secure all of our books before the end of the school year.
Please report early dismissals via ParentVUE or by sending an email to TMSattendance@lcps.org. We ask that you notify us at least 2 hours in advance of the dismissal time. Dismissals after 3pm are highly discouraged due to the end of day dismissal and the congestion of the parking lot at that time.
