Ms.Rivas's First Grade Class

Hello, my name is Karen Rivas and I am your child's first grade teacher. I am pleased to have them as my students and I am very excited to have a fun and exciting year. I have been teaching for almost five years, and I love everything that I do. My job is to help your child succeed academically, but also making sure they are enjoying the different lessons that we are working on. I want to help them understand and take a look at the assignments differently by adding fun activities and incorporating materials that will excite them to work on.

Looking forward to a great year.

Math Game

I want to invite you to visit this URL , it will take you and your child to the “Ultimate Speed Math” game, which is a great way to practice math operations. This game will give your child the opportunity to choose between a math operation, it can be addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Once they have selected the operation they desire to play with, they will also be able to select the numbers they want to work with. After they have selected their operation and numbers, they can also set their own goals and a timer in order to proceed with the game. During the game, for every correct answer they press their car will speed up and get closer to the finish line. When the game is completed, and your child is satisfied with his/her goal they will be able to print out a certificate of achievement. This is a great way for them to see that they did an amazing job and also it will allow them to obtain as many certificates as they can!

Read, Read, Read

Read to and with your child every day. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to develop and incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom. Try to spend 10-15 minutes reading with your child in order to make a difference in his/her learning skills. READ, READ, READ!

  • October 31 is our Fall Festival celebration at 3:00 p.m.
  • Please sign up for fall conferences as soon as possible.
  • Reading forms are due Tuesday!

Do not forget, Addition flash cards are being sent home for your child to practice. We would like your child to be able to answer these operations quickly, without thinking. More facts will come home as your child demonstrates automaticity with these.
