Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
On Wednesday our middle school students participated in a “Council of Elders” culminating their yearlong Heroic Journey. The council is composed of adults from around the community that listen and probe the adolescent as they share a personal goal, eulogy, shield, silhouette, and life map. It is an incredibly powerful “rite of passage”.
In the third plane of development, 12-18, the adolescent is filled with self-concern and self-assessment. It is a sensitive period for critical thinking and exploring deep moral and social values. They have a strong desire to have more control over their lives and adopt an “I can stand on my own” mentality.
It is a beautiful sometimes tearful, often funny, full of promise celebration. A big thank you to the middle school staff, Ms. Herbst, Miss Faith and Ms. Matthews as well as our elders for all of their work with our teens and tweens. **See the attached power point for a bit more information on this incredible journey!
We are one week away from our annual talent show! We cannot wait to show you how talented we are. An enchilada dinner will be available for purchase from 5-5:45 for the cost of $5.00 per plate. Drinks and dessert may also be purchased. We will serve through the cafeteria serving line and enjoy dinner in our courtyard. At 6:00 our show and basket raffle will begin!
Wow, what an incredible outpouring of love the staff at Shaw enjoyed this week. We have had fresh coffee every morning! Monday, we enjoyed bagels, Tuesday snacks, Wednesday sweets and treats and a neck and shoulder massage, Thursday yogurt parfaits, pasta salad and Friday Pita Jungle! We appreciate the work of the teacher appreciation committee, Alyssa Cowan, Krista Pacion, Adrianne Speas and all of our community for recognizing and celebrating our staff. Thank you!
The Shaw Montessori Soccer Team is now 6 and 0 as they head into playoffs and the championship game. Go Stars, we are proud of your accomplishment!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Summer Homework
We shared our summer homework folders and learning expectations at the last Site Council meeting. The material provides an opportunity to offer structure and systems for our children during the summer. Please consider the suggestions and ideas provided in the folders to incorporate into your child’s daily routine as their “homework.”
Your child should access the folder for the grade level that they will be entering this fall. Additionally, your child’s teacher may contact you with specific opportunities based on your child’s individual needs.

Overdue Library Books
Summer break is almost here, time to return library books!
By the end of this week, each student with checked-out library books will have received a notice. If children can no longer locate their books there are 2 options:
- Replace, does not need to be a new book
- Send in book replacement funds (prices are located on notice)
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me patricia.karnes@phxschools.org
Thanks so much!
Ms. Patti

Garden Update
Greetings!
We had our first market table of the season last Wednesday. We sold heads of lettuce and bouquets of flowers. Ms. Hess’ class partnered with the garden and sold transplants. We raised over $100.00 for the library! We will do another market table next Wednesday (05/11) and donate the money to the library again. Please bring your cash! We will have more transplants, squash, gourds, carrots, eggs and bouquets! I will make sure we put a table at primary pickup as well. See ya’ll then!
We sold 8 chickens this week. They are going fast. The sign-up sheet is on the table outside of the office. If you would like some chicks then please put your name and number on that sheet. There will also be some new hatchlings next week if you prefer some smaller fluffballs. Also, let me know if you want a rooster. Big Daddy is up for grabs. You can notate that you want a rooster on the sheet on the table.
Our chickens will go to Payson for the summer. They can enjoy the cool mountain weather and get away from the hustle and bustle of Shaw Montessori. They will return to the school in late September. Be sure to say goodbye to them next week. It will be their last week on campus.
The bottle cap drive is ongoing! Please bring your plastic bottle caps to school in a Ziplock bag and drop them off at the front table. Thank you for saving your caps.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
