Bullying Prevention Awareness Month
October marks Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. This is an important time to focus on and raise awareness of the ways in which schools, parents, and the community can partner together to help protect our students while at the same time building and reinforcing the important skills of citizenship, communication, and collaboration that will help ensure their success after high school. At Elk Ridge our counselor delivers Bullying Prevention lessons that focus on recognizing, refusing, and resisting bullying, as well as the power bystanders, have in bullying situations. While bullying may take on many forms, the consistent and alarming role that social media plays in school-related reports of bullying presents a unique challenge. Social media, like many things in our society, can have very positive influences on our lives if used appropriately and in moderation. Unfortunately, the research continues to reaffirm the dangers of social media and the negative impact that these platforms have on children. There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of the negative effects. Here are a few tips to consider:
- Start with WHY?- A good place to start any conversation about social media is to explore the reason for setting up an account in the first place. Once you are clear on the purpose you can have meaningful conversations about every other aspect of the social media journey. You can also have conversations about the dangers associated with social media, acceptable behaviors and content that should be shared, and how to make safe choices online. This is also a good time to set reasonable limits on the amount of time spent on social media.
- Model healthy social media behaviors- Teens are not the only ones susceptible to the negative impacts of social media. Make it a point to reflect on the interactions you are having on social media and the impact it is having on your relationships and overall health. Is this something that brings joy to your life and strengthens the bonds of human interaction and supportive relationships? By exploring those questions and reflecting on your own use of social media you will be better equipped to have those conversations with your student.
Reminders
- Please contact the office if there are any changes to your child's end of day transportation for the day.
- Cloth face coverings or disposable face masks cloth face coverings are required indoors and are optional for students outdoors. (A cloth face covering is anything that completely covers the mouth and nose, fits securely, and is made of tightly woven fabric.)
- Please keep your child home when they are sick or have been exposed to COVID. If your student has been exposed to COVID, please call the office to let us know. Thank you!
- Please be mindful during arrival and drop-off times, whether you are on our campus or on a neighboring street. Our goal is for students to arrive and leave school safely each day! Please remember that there is no parking on our grass, it is a huge safety issue.
- Fall weather is here! Please bring your child to school with a coat, especially on those rainy days!
