Kansas-Nebraska Act
-slavery in Kansas and Nebraska would be determined by a vote

Dred Scott Vs. Sandford Case
-ruled that African Americans were not citizens
-also ruled that they didn't have the right to sue in court
-caused uproar among free African Americans
Harper's Ferry

Fort Sumter
-southern forces opened fire on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861
