Prayers for the James Smith Cree Nation
The horrendous events at James Smith Cree Nation and nearby Weldon, Saskatchewan are heartbreaking and beyond comprehension. We offer deepest condolences to the community as they support one another through this profound loss. To those who have lost loved ones, and to those who will continue to struggle with physical and emotional injury, we hold you close to our hearts and in our prayers. God bless.
New to the SILC Family - Mr. Matthew Bennett

New Options - OUTDOOR EDUCATION Added
Your child will go beyond the school walls to explore what they can do outdoors, to learn more about the environment and to understand their role in protecting it. They will appreciate life in all its forms and understand basic ecological processes. Through various outdoor activities, they will develop skill, judgement and confidence in, and sensitivity to the importance of, taking care of their environment. Elementary Classroom
Welcome to week 3 of online learning. I hope things are going well for your family. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me! A couple of things for this week:
1. We will be doing individual meets this week. If your child is in grade 1/2/3, please sign up for 2 consecutive blocks. I will be doing a phonological awareness assessment with your child and a reading assessment. This will provide me a starting point with your child so we can continue to build on their reading skills.
2. If your child is in grade 4/5/6, please sign up for 1 block. I will be doing a reading assessment with your child. You will find the link to the sign- up page on your child's grade level newsletter.
3. Just a reminder that grade 5/6 google meet starts at 9am and grade 1/2/3/4 google meet starts at 9:30am.
4. I have had some interest about Scholastic Book Club. On your child's Language Arts page, you will find a parent letter with instructions for signing up for an account and our class code. The books will be sent directly to your house. You will also find the links to the September book flyer and the September/October book flyer.
5. Here are the links to our calendar and grade level newsletters.

Student Schedules and PowerSchool
If you need to make changes to your schedule (grades 10-12 only), email Mrs. Damur melissad@eics.ab.ca or Mrs. Melnyk tracym@eics.ab.ca.
PowerSchool is your "one stop shop" to monitor: grades, student progress, student fees, updated contact information. Please get in the habit of checking it regularly.
Mrs. Wright put together a video to guide you through the process of becoming "PowerSchool Savvy".

Accessing the Canvas Classroom
It is VERY Important... On the first day, log In to ensure all of your courses are there. Chesterton Students will only see their first semester course, that is ok! All other SILC students will see the courses they are currently taking.
Each class requires you to complete the first "quiz" or "questionnaire" THIS MUST BE COMPLETED FOR EVERY CLASS ON THE FIRST DAY. Yes, most of your answers will be the same, but it is important to complete this for every class so every teacher has the most accurate information for your education plan. St Isidore is a very unique and flexible environment and we do this so you have all of the flexibility and personalization you need. So, my friends, that is your very first job... Go in to every course and fill out the "Questionnaire" on Day 1!
What do you need before you begin?
Good Internet
Laptop or Computer or Chromebook - no iPhones, iPads, or tablets, Canvas is hard for student work on these.
Logging in every day and keeping up with your work!!!!! EVERY DAY!!!
Having troubles? ASK your teacher for help - do not be shy!
Still having troubles? Come in to the Centre or a virtual meeting with your teacher. Please don’t wait too long. We are here to help :)
Get in the habit of logging into your Powerschool Account regularly to check your marks. If deadlines pass, a mark of “zero” will be put in as a placeholder "MISSING" until you hand in your work. I cannot stress enough the importance of being diligent with your work! You must login using the same username and password that you use for your EICS gmail and your Canvas classroom: PowerSchool Login
If you were with EICS (even if you came from: ABJ, SAB, OLMP, or St. Mary) last year, your password is still the same. If you are new, you will be given a generic password that you must change immediately!
Are You New to SILC and EICS?
When you registered with SILC (EICS) you were assigned a six digit user number. Your parents set up their own account when they registered you and can find your number easily for you. If you are struggling, please email us or call 780-449-6463 and say, “Hello! I am a new student and need my 6 digit User Number to login please :)”
This is your student number that was assigned to you, and will stay with you as long as you are a student of EICS. PLEASE, do NOT share your 6 digit username or password with anybody as this is your security login in for your email and your course work in your Canvas Classroom. Allowing others into your account is a violation of the EICS Tech User Agreement
Students will work on web-based courses using our Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
How to log on to your Canvas Classroom:
**CLOSE & logout of all other Google/email/browser applications and start with a fresh Google Internet Browser. This means personal gmail accounts. Log out of EVERYTHING!
In Google Chrome, open your EICS school email by heading to: mail.eics.ab.ca
Log in using your 6*****@eics.ab.ca & password. Your username is your 6 digit EICS Student ID. If you are a returning student, your passwords will be the same as last year. If you are new ...The default password for your first login will be sent privately - YOU MUST CREATE A NEW PASSWORD and don’t forget it! If you ever need a password change, go to: Change Password
Then, in a new Chrome tab, go to: eics.instructure.com
You should see your SILC Canvas Dashboard with your classes there.
Please head to our website for up-to-date info: https://silc.eics.ab.ca/
PARENTS - Want to see how your children are progressing? You can download a Parent Observer App. Watch Mrs. Wright's video below.
SILC Exam Policy
Now that all Covid restrictions have been lifted, we are reverting back to the "pre-Covid" normal SILC world. What does that mean? That our Centre will be open to all of our students this year. Come by and meet with your teachers to get help with anything that you need! SILC students in grades 7-12 will be required to complete a Mid Term Exam and a Final Exam. These exams are mandatory and will be proctored to ensure student understanding and accurate assessment of curricular outcomes. There will be 3 modes to complete student Mid-Term and Finals:
- In person at the Centre
- Online through our proctor service "Proctorio"
- Arranged with your teacher over a Google Meet
Any questions? Reach out to your teachers.

Sacramental Preparation:
Alll parents the deadline to join Fall preparation classes here at the church is September 7. This is for all grades: First Reconciliation/First Communion AND Confirmation.
OLPH parish has a Family Faith Formation approach to sacramental preparation, so we offer several dates and options throughout the school year to help busy parents choose a time that will work best for them to participate fully and actively with their child.
Specific Reminders for Classroom Teachers:
Grade 2-5: Students can register for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, which can be taken one right after the other. Three different sessions will be offered again this schools year, Fall, Winter or Spring. If a child has not been baptized yet, we will also work with that family on additional age appropriate preparation!
Grade 6-8: Students can register for Confirmation. The program at OLPH runs over 5 months and will be offered twice this year, in the first and second semester of the school year. If a student has not yet celebrated first communion or reconciliation, their preparation for those sacraments will be incorporated into their preparation for Confirmation so the child can be fully initiated.
Interest in volunteering at the church…can contact Natalie Lavigne at 780-467-5470 (ext 225) or email sacraments@olph.ca.
