Becoming a Citizen Scientist
Presented by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Grades: 3-8
Cost: FREE
Date: April 23
Times: 9:00-9:45, 10:30-11:15 or 1:00-1:45 CST
What if you find something outside but don’t know what it is? How do you find out? What if you could share that discovery with others to excite them about nature as well? Citizen science is one way to address each of those questions. One particularly useful tool is iNaturalist, an online network with an associated app for iOS and Android, where participants document all of the living organisms around them, share that data with the rest of the naturalist community, and learn a lot in the process.

Children's Day - Japan
Presented by Old Jail Art Center
Grades: 1-3
Cost: $65
Dates: May 2, 3 or 4
Times: 10:00-10:45 or 11:00-11:45 CST
Did you know that each May 5th is Children's Day in Japan? Join the OJAC as we celebrate the history and traditions of this ancient holiday. Students will read A Carp For Kimiko, by Virginia Kroll and discuss ideas of tradition and change. While viewing ancient porcelain vessels and woodblock prints with Koinobori imagery, students will discuss the Koi Fish as a symbol for character and perserverence in Japanese culture. Using colors and designs that express their identity, students will then create their own Koinobori flag to hang at school or home to celebrate Children's Day! While students work, they will listen to traditional Japanese children's songs about Koinobori.

During this program we will investigate different species or types of aquatic macroinvertebrates collected from a freshwater habitat. We will discuss their lifecycle, the adaptations which allow them to live in an aquatic environment, and even how you can determine the level of pollution in the water based on the types of macroinvertebrates that are present.
