SEL Lessons set for November & December

For the months of November and December, the SEL Lessons will continue to focus on taking care of yourself. Specifically, students will learn about emotions, and gain an understanding that emotions are normal in that they are biologically based and experienced in a variety of ways.

When we are aware of our emotions, that helps us to be ready to manage our emotions in healthy ways, including managing stress. In addition to learning some ways to manage stress in order to help them be successful in school, students will also focus on gratitude and joy. If you would like more information regarding the lessons or to view the slide decks prepared for students to view the lessons with their teacher, please refer to this link.

November & December, 2021 - SEL Lessons for 21-22 SY

Lesson #9

November 8, 2021

Take Care of Yourself:
Neuroanatomy & Stress

Students will learn that some stress is good in that it can help propel us to help with performance, but continuous or chronic stress can impact us. In order to take care of ourselves, students learn some stress management techniques.

Lesson #10

November 15, 2021

Take Care of Yourself:

Students will discuss gratitude and gain an understanding regarding the benefits of expressing gratitude. Students are then encouraged to explore ways to express gratitude.

No SEL Lesson the week of November 22, 2021 due to Thanksgiving Recess (No School on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday)

Lesson #11

November 29, 2021

Take Care of Yourself:

Managing emotions and stress

Students learn and discuss stress and the brain’s response. The “Hand Model” of the brain is used to show what happens in our brain when we feel stressed. Students also learn about the “Window of Tolerance” and ways to be in the optimal window where one is regulated, present, flexible and reasonable. Finally, students discuss ways to help calm our brain so we can take good care of ourselves and help promote optional learning.

Lesson #12

December 6, 2021

Take Care of Yourself:

Students focus on joy-what it is, the brain and joy, and ways to choose joy.

No SEL Lesson the week of December 13, 2021

Help build a bright future as a P-H-M employee

Parents, guardians, grandparents and community members can help build a bright future as an employee of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Who would work better in P-H-M schools than those with a vested interest in the success of P-H-M schools? It's a unique way to give back to the community.

In addition to the many benefits of working in P-H-M schools, it offers parents/guardians the opportunity to be on the same schedule as their children in terms of start and finish times to the school day, as well as winter break, spring break, etc.

Become a Penn Booster !!!!

We truly appreciate your dedication and support of Penn High School. The Penn Booster's main function is to enhance the overall educational experience for the students here at PHS, and we couldn’t do it without you. The Boosters provides resources for our PHS athletic and student groups through various fundraising efforts, including events, sponsorships, donations, concession stand income, and most importantly through our memberships.

Memberships are $10 a year and are open to anyone interested in supporting Penn. Becoming a Booster Member does not mean you have to be on the Booster Board. You can be a representative for your respective athletic or academic team and be the liaison to the Board, or you can just support the Booster program by becoming a member with your $10 donation.

We are also excited to have launched our new Booster website. Please visit us at as we continue to connect with the PHM community.

If you are interested in sharing your gifts or talents with the Boosters, we would very much enjoy finding an opportunity for you to do that. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to the opportunity to meet you and talk about how you can help our group continue to provide the “Gold Standard” that we are accustomed to here at Penn.

Work Permits no longer required

The State of Indiana is creating an Employer Registration system for any employer that employs five (5) or more minors.

Effective 7/1/2021, Indiana will no longer require work permits for minor employees. Employers will no longer be required to complete the “Intent to Employ” form, and schools will no longer issue work permits.

Employers will be responsible for maintaining an accurate list of all minor employees. If an employer has four (4) or fewer minor employees, registration will not be required. This registration does not have any impact on the work hour requirements for minors. All employers must still comply with the Teen Work Hour Restrictions.

Student Lunch Delivery Policy

If a student forgets their lunch, only a lunch from home will be able to be dropped off at Penn. In order to support P-H-M’s Wellness Guidelines, we ask that food from outside vendors not be dropped off at school. Services such as Door Dash, Uber Eats or Grub Hub are not permitted on campus.
