PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Riverdale Families,

Spring has sprung!! The sun is shining, the flowers are in bloom and the students have summer in their sights. That being said, there is still much to do this year, and we’ll be using every minute we have with our students to make sure they are ready for their next school year. The next 22 school days (only 22?!?!) are going to be action packed with field trips, presentations, Cultural Week, and so, so much more. As my time at Riverdale starts to wind down, I am most definitely looking forward to soaking up as much time with our students as I can!

All of that being said, please be sure to take a look at the Riverdale website (linked here) to stay up-to-date on events happening at Riverdale School. On the website, you’ll see a calendar on which we post when field trips, Spring Concert, Field Day, and everything else is happening! If you’re someone who likes to print a calendar out, Ms. Martin has made a PDF version of the calendar for you to view below.

With the warmer weather here, it is also extremely important that you send your student to school with a water bottle. As your students will tell you, there is no air conditioning at Riverdale School, and our classrooms get very hot. We do our very best to keep students and staff as cool and comfortable as possible, but please help us out by sending your students prepared for the heat.

Let’s take the next 22 school days to celebrate all we’ve accomplished this year and, frankly, over the last 2 years! I am extremely proud of the work we have all done as a community and look forward to what more we can do!

Happy Spring,

Ed Paris, Principal

The Dedham Elementary School Adjustment Counselors/Social Workers, and School Psychologists hope that you’ll be able to join us at our next webinar, which will be on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 at 3:10 PM. Our topic will be Anxiety and Depression. A zoom link will come out that week.

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month. Ms. Khouri and I presented to the staff about the whole class work we have been doing supporting the students' social and emotional health. There is a bulletin board outside the nurse’s office with mental health resources, self-care tips, and advice from famous people, who have experienced mental health struggles. Check out https://childmind.org/ for a multitude of resources and for general information about supporting your children’s mental health.

As always, please be in touch if I can be of assistance to you in connecting with resources, summer plans, or about any concern you have. You can reach me directly at 781-310-2709 (private line and answering machine) the school’s main line, 781-310-2000 or at esheehy@dedham.k12.ma.us

LIBRARY - MS. MAYYASI

The week of May 23rd, I will be having the spring book fair in the library. Students will be attending the book fair during their scheduled library class and parents are more than welcome to attend and shop with their children at that time. There are two events happening that week and parents may want to come at that time. The Spring Concert takes place on Wednesday, May 25th and parents are welcome to come to the book fair either before or after the concert. Cultural Night is that same day and the book fair will be open that evening as well. More details and specific hours the book fair is open will be coming home. All proceeds of the book fair benefit the library. I have been able to purchase many, many books over the years due to your support of the book fair. https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=riverdaleelementaryschool10

Last month, I wrote about Dedham Reads and we have begun the lessons connected to this. The students really enjoy it both because of the topic, food and the hands-on nature of the lessons. Some students have created food collages which are hanging outside the library. Students in grades 1-3 are creating pinch pots with their favorite food in it. And the 4th and 5th graders are working on their food trucks. All of these things will be on display at Cultural Night. I am always amazed with how creative our students are.

ASK A GRADER

Ask a first-grader to explain the difference between non-fiction, fiction, and realistic fiction.

Ask a second-grader what a living thing needs.

Ask a third-grader to tell you about their favorite multiplication strategy to use when they are stuck on a multiplication fact.

Ask a fourth-grader to describe their favorite animal they saw at the Roger Williams Zoo, and then talk about some of the adaptations they have that help them survive in their environment.

Ask a fifth-grader to tell you about the fantasy novel he/she/they are currently reading. Have them tell you the setting and who holds the power. In addition, have them tell you about an interesting part that has occurred so far in the novel.
