The Wallace Wildcat
Hoboken, NJ- June 10, 2022
Dear Wallace School Parents and Guardians,
One of the most anticipated days of the year finally came… FIELD DAY! This year’s field day was one of the best in recent history. As our Wildcats entered JFK Stadium, students were greeted in true Wallace fashion. Our illustrious PTO meticulously planned an amazing day for our students. There was music, obstacle courses, tug of war, water stations, and a slew of other fun and exciting events. Students also enjoyed a “backyard BBQ” in our playground area. The day went off without a hitch. There were smiles, laughter, and some exhausted students (and adults) at the end of a wonderful day. Thank you to the PTO, parent volunteers, cafeteria staff, teachers, maintenance, security, the SRO’s and all of the staff members who made this year’s field day a memorable event for our students. You are all truly appreciated.

Wow, there are only two more weeks left of this school year! The students are looking forward to their “End of the Year Celebration” on Thursday.
The students had a blast at field day! It was definitely fun and they left exhausted.
In Language Arts, the students finished the Reading Wonders Series and are now participating in an author study. We read and listened to various books by Mo Willems. Make sure to ask your child about their favorite Mo Willems book. We are also continuing to review all the sight words and phonetic skills we learned this school year.
In Math, the students are reviewing and practicing addition and subtraction skills. They are continuing to visualize, represent and solve addition and subtraction story problems. Students also continued to practice writing and representing numbers to twenty by playing games and using ten frames to represent the numbers.
In Science, the students are learning about the life cycle of bees and how they make honey. They were fascinated about the job of a beekeeper. They wanted to learn all about how the beekeeper takes care of the bees.
First Grade
ILP - This week our project was sailing into summer. Students wrote a narrative about a summer adventure and made a ship craft.
Math - Unit 8 in math is all about 3D shapes. We went on a 3D shape hunt in class, children had so much fun going around the room looking for everyday shapes. We also built a sandcastle out of 2D shapes.
We started practicing for our end of the year celebration, we are memorizing a poem and singing a song. First grade loves performing!
Second Grade
"This week in ELA our essential question was, "What Do Myths Teach Us About Plants?". We read stories like "Why Fir Tree Keeps His Leaves" and "The Golden Flower". We practiced rereading to develop a deeper understanding of the text, as well as identifying the theme. Our phonics focus this week was open and closed syllables. We also learned new vocabulary words and reviewed adjectives. In writing, we are finishing up our “All About Books”. Students have been working so hard on their animal habitat books and are excited to share them with their peers and families.
In Math, we are continuing with our unit on measurement. To start, the class discussed things that could be measured, things they've seen measured and tools used to measure things. The class then worked on their first step of measuring using an activity kids love to do - JUMP! They practiced seeing how far they could jump from a starting point using 3 different types of jumps - frog, rabbit and kid! Partners took turns marking where each other's feet landed at the end of their jumps. Students used nonstardard units to measure their string lengths (which represented their jumps lengths) using paperclips, popsicle sticks, and even their shoes! From there, the class made a chart using the data of everyone's longest and shortest jumps.
In social studies, we are recapping the school year with reflections of our favorite moments and memories of second grade. We are also discussing what advice they can provide to younger students about what they should know and prepare for in order to be successful in 2nd grade. Students will continue to reflect on their year and share with friends what lessons they learned and what they’re looking forward to next year!
Students had an absolute blast at field day on Friday! Students enjoyed participating in the activities with their friends and peers. Everyone had a terrific time. A huge thank you to everyone who made it possible!"
Third Grade
Fourth Grade
ELA
Our 4th Grader readers completed the novel, “Jim and Me.” Jim and Me. Jim & Me is an awesome book about two archenemies named Bobby Fuller and the main character Joe Stoshack. Bobby wants Joe to take him back in time to meet legendary Jim Thorpe. Joe is the only one that can do it because he has a special power to travel through time with baseball cards. Finally, when they are back in 1913 some amazing things happen. Joe and Bobby met the Giants baseball team Jim Thorpe played for them. They meet hall of famers and experience the thrill of baseball. What will happen in this awesome, page-turning adventure?
Students began their new novel, “Ancestors Approved :Intertribal Stories for Kids.”A bustling anthology of 16 short stories framed by opening and closing poems all connect to the annual intertribal powwow in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Readers are immersed in the sights, sounds, energy, and emotions of a powwow experience as diverse Native protagonists prepare for, travel to, and converge on the event for a variety of reasons. This week we focused on character traits and determining how characters change from the beginning of the story to the end.
This week students wrote their own book review about the novel, Jim and Me. Students had to rate the book by giving it 1-5 stars. They had to write about what they liked best/least about the book, what characters did they like best and why and would you recommend this book to a friend. Students presented their book reviews to the class. Well done by all!
Math
Our 4th grade mathematicians continued with Unit 7 : How Many Packages and Groups? This week students focused on solutions to cluster problems. Students solved multiplication problems by changing one factor and adjusting. Students also worked on multiplying a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number. Students found the multiples of numbers through skip counting and and using multiplication patterns to determine a sequence of multiples.
Fifth Grade
In Math, the 5th Grade Mathematicians are finding the perimeter and area of squares by using the correct formula. They are also comparing the perimeter and area of squares when the dimensions have doubled.
In Social Studies the Historians are evaluating the goals and accomplishments of the 13th Amendment and the Freedmen's Bureau by closely reading informational texts and engaging in discussion to explain how these initiatives supported previously enslaved people.
In Science, kids in Ms. Leon's class continue to work hard on their STEAM (yes steam) projects, by creating clean water filters with everyday supplies. Here we have Sienna Rivera and Martin Shchudro who created theirs with a 2 liter plastic soda bottle, a straw for drinking, cotton, a cotton mask, rocks, and black beans.
On Friday the 5th Grade spent the afternoon at JFK stadium part of the Wallace Field Day because Wallace Rocks. Thank you to the PTO for hosting the Field Day.

In 2nd Grade music this week, students explore composition. They continued their studies of melodic composition and learned how to design song lyrics. They used graphic organizers to brainstorm ideas for lyrics around specific topics. In teams, they created their own melodies and completed the quiz module challenge.
Chorus
Our chorus students performed at Sinatra Park on Thurs. night. The students sang “Home” by Phillip Phillips, One Direction’s “Drag me Down,” and a medley from Glee of “Lean on Me” and “Don’t Stop Believin”. It was so nice to see them performing for the community with the beautiful backdrop of the Hudson and city skyline. They had a wonderful time and did an excellent job!
