Twin Peaks Middle School
Weekly RAM Newsletter
From the desk of Principal Mills - March 12th, 2023
Happy Sunday Ram Families!
I hope this newsletter finds you all well and staying dry after our most recent storm. If you haven't already done so already, please make sure you "spring forward" and set your clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Savings Time that happened overnight.
This Monday and Tuesday, March 13th and 14th, are minimum day schedules with a 12:35pm release time on both days to support afternoon Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. Our staff, including our counseling and admin teams, have scheduled conferences for select students on both days - 6th grade conferences will be taking place in the library, and conferences for 7th and 8th graders will be taking place in the MPR/gym.
Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are held for a variety of reasons, and the point of our conferences this week are to have conversations and partner with students and parents to identify areas of concern and develop a plan to improve overall student success. These conversations are not always easy to have, but often necessary... for parents attending conferences this week, thank you in advance for making time in your busy schedules to meet with us.
TPMS is looking forward to participating in See Something, Say Something Week sponsored by our ASB and the Sandy Hook Foundation. Each year, thousands of schools and youth organizations nationwide participate in Say Something Week, a week of celebrating the importance of trusted adults and upstanders in our community! We hope you chose to participate in the national Say Something Week, March 13–17 and join in our celebration this week by participating in our themed dress-up days. Check out the flyer below for more information about the week.
We encourage all TPMS 8th grade families to attend the 8th Grade Family Night this Tuesday, March 14th at 5pm at PHS to learn about clubs, activities, and the wide array of elective and core courses available. Families will also have an opportunity to see the campus and meet some teachers. Please CLICK HERE for additional course request information and important dates for PHS and other PUSD high schools if your student plans to attend another school in the district.
Don't forget that Online Continuing Student Registration will be open from March 1- March 31, 2023. Parents and Guardians should have received an email notification that the website is now open. Please remember that we must receive a completed digital packet for all returning students by March 31st. Please see the Online Registration section below for more information and links to complete the online registration process.
Spring sports are underway and that comes with requests to store sporting equipment. Unfortunately, we do not have space in the office to store sports equipment for after school athletics - please make arrangements to have sports equipment available to your student at the end of the day, or they can work with their PE Coach or last block teacher to see if space may be available in the locker room or their classroom.
Finally this week, as we rotate lunch splits starting this Monday (7th grade - first lunch, 8th grade - 2nd lunch, 6th graders are split between both lunches), we will also be starting a Clean Campus Campaign to address the trash issue we are experiencing on campus. New signage will be in place starting Monday to help direct students with food and drinks away from the quad and towards the lunch areas to finish their snacks and meals. Please help us to support this campaign by talking with your student about the importance of being responsible for your own trash, and taking personal responsibility to help do their part to help keep our campus clean. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

See Something Say Something Week
Twin Peaks Middle School is proud to partner with the Sandy Hook Promise to celebrate See Something, Say Something Week from March 13-17th. Earlier this year we reminded our students that as they start the year, in an effort to make sure everyone feels a sense of belonging on campus to Start With Hello. This coming week, we emphasize the importance of noticing the signs of our classmates who need help by asking our students to See Something, Say Something. We will have spirit days each day this week (See above for list) and lunchtime events every day designed to remind students that they belong here and are valued members of our Twin Peaks family.
Attendance Corner
Parents - we need your help! Please try and call at least 60 minutes ahead of time if you need to pick up your student during either lunch period. With over 500 students out during any single lunch, it is difficult to locate students quickly during lunch time. If you call ahead we can send a pass to your student prior to lunch and we can expedite your wait time. Our attendance hotline is (858)668-2730. Thanks for your partnership!
CJSF Update
Shoutout to our CJSF Executive Cabinet members Kyle Sosnowski (President), Jack Green (Vice President), and Esan Murphy (Treasurer) who presented at the CJSF Student Leadership Virtual Conference in February. All sessions were presented by students, for students, and about students! They represented Twin Peaks Middle School (only Poway Unified School at the conference) and highlighted the ways that our CJSF members contribute to their community by running a canned food drive in the fall, coin drive in spring for childhood cancer, tutor other peers, and complete community service! Thank you Kyle, Jack and Esan for your leadership

Middle School Redesign
Course Request Forms (CRFs) will be coming out in the next few weeks for students to select classes for next school year. One of the the things you will notice on the student CRFs for next school year are additional elective classes for your students to select from. As part of the PUSD middle school redesign, our faculty recently voted to pilot an 8 period schedule for next school year at Twin Peaks MS; this will provide students with 1 additional period each day to take an elective and/or support class without extending the school day beyond it's current start time of 8:30am and end time of 3:15pm. We plan to switch to trimesters to align our grading periods with Poway High School, and will also keep our odd/even rotating blocks periods. Many students and teachers were in favor of shortening our 100 minute block periods, so we will add a 4th block period to each day, reducing class periods to 75 minutes long.
We are excited about these changes and hope that it provides more elective options for all students, as well as opportunities for students to receive the additional academic help and support they might need. Our teachers have stepped up to the challenge and are working on developing several new exciting elective options for students in the sciences, humanities and visual and performing arts. New elective offerings could be trimester or year-long, and will differ at each grade level. As we pilot these new offerings and schedule this next school year, please make sure to share your concerns with our admin and counseling teams. The admin team contact information is LOCATED HERE and our TPMS counselor contact information is LOCATED HERE on our TPMS website.
