Weekly Events
- Tues. 9/11 - 2:45 - 3:30 PM Drama Club and Play Informational Meeting - Brief informational meeting for prospective drama club members and their parents and/or for those interested in auditioning for the spring play. (*Optional for parents - NOT required)
- Wed. 9/12- 2:45-3:45 PM Running Club Starts (letters were sent home Friday for those who made it - you may email Martin Smith at msmith005@horrycountyschools.net for more information)
- Fri. 9/14 - SCA's Hats Off to School Supplies! - Students may wear a hat if they bring in at least one school supply to help stock our closet! Please remember all hats should be appropriate and not cover face.
- Week of 9/17-9/21 - SCA Pet Week: Student Council will be collecting NEW or GENTLY used blankets and beach towels, leashes, NEW pet toys, cat litter, cleaning supplies, and monetary donations to be donated to the Grand Strand Humane Society from September 24-28! Due to the animals' special diets, food will not be accepted as part of this year's pet drive.

- Thurs. Sept. 20th - 2:45 - 3:45 PM Yearbook Club Starts
- Thursday, 9/20 - SCA Teacher Pet Contest held during all lunches. Teachers will send a picture of their pet. All pictures will be displayed for the students to see in the cafeteria. The pets will be voted on by the students during their grade level lunch. Votes cost $1.00 each. The money raised will be donated to the Myrtle Beach Humane Society.
- Fri. Sept. 21st - PTA Bait Shop Open during student lunches
- Week of 9/24-9/28 - Start with Hello Week - program teaches students, grades 2–12, the skills they need to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness, and encourage them to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation.
- Mon. 9/24 - Hey Day! School Morning Assembly w/Special Guest Speaker
- Tues. 9/25 - Green Out Day - Students will show support for Sandy Hook community and honor the lives lost to gun violence by wearing green, colors of Sandy Hook victims.
- Wed. 9/26 - No One Eats Alone - Encourage students to sit with other peers to make sure no child is alone during lunch.
- Thurs. 9/27 - Sticky Note Day - Students will be given sticky notes throughout the day and encouraged to write kind words and positive messages.
- Fri. 9/28 - Shark Frenzy - Sharks United - Everyone is encouraged to wear their shark gear!
- Wed. 9/26 - Vision Screenings

Gifted and Talented
* Attached is the 2018-2019 Gifted & Talented Screening and Identification Notification.
* The CogAt (Cognitive Abilities Test) will be given to ALL 5th grade students in October, as well as any referred 6th grade students.
* Any parent, student, teacher, or administrator may refer a student for testing by contacting the SJIS guidance department or by contacting the Office of Gifted and Talented Programs prior to September 14, 2018.
Academic and Career Planning
This year the Guidance Department will be working with 5th and 6th grade students to build on the career exploration process and continue examining their interests and how they relate to the world of work. Students will take a career interest inventory and begin learning about the 16 career clusters.
* The Guidance Department will also be working with students on Academic Planning. Students will develop skills and knowledge related to goal setting and learn about various educational opportunities in Horry County.
* Students will begin by completing a career assessment this month!
PTA NEWS
- Box Tops will be collected for the school. There will a box in the cafeteria located on the stage where students can drop them off.
- Bait Shop will be open every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month during lunches. Next Bait Shop date will be Fri. Sept. 21st. Cash and check (made out to SJI PTA) will be accepted.
