What we did last week...
Last week our anchor book was "My Mother is a Baker". This was a fun book that we sang. Our theme was friends and family. We learned all about the friends in our classroom and learned to recognize their names. We also learned how to be a good friend, by sharing, playing together, and helping each other. We had fun helping our new friend learn about our classroom and how our school day works. Our Matt and Molly story was "Matt Cleans up with his Friends"
What will happen this week...
We will continue our friends and family theme. Our anchor book will continue to be My Mother is a Baker. We have been reading other friends and family books. Our favorite friend book is a big book about a duck and a polar bear. It's called A Splendid Friend Indeed. We will continue to read this book and other friends and family books. They are doing a really great job at helping each other throughout the day and being a "good friend".
Table Time Activities:
Monday - Friendship Quilt, we'll each make a piece of the quilt on paper and put them together for one collective art project.
Tuesday - Home, we will make a house out of shapes.
Thursday - No School
Friday - No School
Ideas for Home...
Making Your Home a Place For Readers
Several tips to help parents of young children promote literacy at home.
- Choose a quiet time for reading to your child, as in before a nap, bedtime, or after dinner.
- Choose a special place for family reading, like a comfortable chair or pillows piled on the floor.
- Let your child select the book for you to read aloud.
- Hold the book so that she or he can see the pictures. If possible, also let her or him turn the pages.
- Take time to look at and talk about the pictures. Don't just read the story: talk about it. Let your child point out letters, shapes, colors, and animals.
- Understand that reading begins at home. Children read their environments, so make your home a print rich environment.
- Read! Don't expect reading to be important to your children if they see that it's not important to you.
- Invite your child to read to you. If he or she is a pre reader, he'll often interpret his own story using illustrations and his imagination.
- Make lists, lots of them. Make them for grocery shopping, books to buy and things to take on trips.
- Read aloud to your child every day.

Author Anna Dewdney- The Llama Llama stories
Anna Dewdney passed away this week after fighting brain cancer. Her Llama books are a favorite among children. Her request was that in lieu of a funeral service, friends and family share a story with children. I ask that you take a minute you might not have had and read a special or favorite book to your child, maybe even a Llama Llama book if you have it. I am not asking that you share the reason why as it might be hard or disturbing for children to understand, but just take a moment to pass on the gift of reading.
