SPOKES!
To better explain this process, think of a bicycle wheel. The wheel has a hub with spokes coming out of the hub to support the weight of the wheel and connect to the hub. In this learning experience, our core classes of ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies act as the hub of the wheel. This is what is making our learning happen. The spokes are what your students are doing with the content they learn. These spokes support the learning that is happening in the hubs, and like a wheel, drive student thinking forward.
Take a look at the design challenges students participated in on the first week of Spokes that really helped push their cognitive thinking!
DESIGN CHALLENGES
Spaghetti Towers
Students were tasked with making the tallest tower they could, using only marshmallows and spaghetti noodles.
Mini Boats!
Using only tin foil, students needed to construct a boat that would not only float, but also take on a bit of weight...
Plastic Spoons + Popsicle Sticks = Catapults
With the help of some popsicle sticks, plastic spoons, and a lot of rubber bands, students had to make their very own catapult!
Who has the best paper airplane making skills?
Toothpick Bridges
Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of glue, a lot of toothpicks, a lot of engineering-in-the-making, and a little bit of hope to make a freestanding toothpick bridge.
