Professional Development? What's that?
This past Friday, after students were dismissed, teachers had a training with our school psychologist, Dr. Isley, about dyslexia. One of our most significant take-aways we had is that dyslexia is not a visual processing issue, but rather a problem with auditory processing. A person with dyslexia has difficulty making the connection with what sounds particular letters make, rather than having confusion with what letters look like.
We learned that consistent practice with phonics (the sounds letters make) and phonemic awareness (knowing which letter(s) could be making a certain sound) is essential for a person with dyslexia to build reading skills. Additionally, someone with dyslexia will likely have problems with organization and sequencing of tasks. In young children, they may have been delayed in recognizing rhyming words, developing a dominate hand, and tying their shoes laces. And, because the problem is auditory, someone with dyslexia likely will not process well information told to them, including sets of directions. Visuals may aid in their comprehension of what is being said to them or as references for routines they need to follow.
Despite the challenges with reading and processing auditorily, we learned that dyslexics often have larger right hemispheres than normal readers, thus they may have strong spatial, artistic, musical, mechanical, and engineering skills.
Dyslexia has a strong genetic component, with around 40% of siblings being dyslexic and 50% of parents and their offspring being dyslexic. To learn more about dyslexia, Dr. Isley recommended resources by Dr. Susan Barton at http://www.dys-add.com/ .

Cybersecurity
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not. National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident.
MSBSD is sending out one message each week with a tip sheet centered around an online safety topic. These tips sheets and additional resources are available at https://staysafeonline.org/resources/ . This week’s topic is Tips for Parents on Raising Privacy Savvy Kids.

Día de los Muertos!
This year United Protestant Presbyterian Church in Palmer is helping me host a Día de los Muertos Celebration on Sunday, November 5 from 1pm-5pm. It is a time to remember loved ones who have passed on; it is particularly special to my children and I this year as we remember someone very special to us. Join us in the festivities! Bring pictures or tokens of those individuals that have been special to you and place them on our communal alter. There will be music, arts and crafts projects, food and celebration.
Some history:
Day of the Dead is an interesting holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the chilly days of November 1 & 2. Even though this coincides with the Church holiday called All Soul's & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people of Latin America have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones. Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout Mexico and the Catholic world... Italy, Spain, South America and the Philippines all celebrate All Souls and All Saints Day on November 1st and 2nd. Special Masses and cleaning of the cemetery tombs are part of the traditional activities... however it's only in Central and Southern Mexico where the colorful parties take place in the cemeteries and elaborate ofrenda altars are built in the homes to honor specific family members who have passed on.

In honor of Spanish Heritage Month, classes are participating in a contest called "Sabes Que?" which is Spanish for "Did You Know?" The winners for this week's drawing was Sr. McBride's class! Enjoy your piñata and congratulations!
Thank you to Mr. Sides and our other helpful dads for bringing our bleachers home!
Did You Know?
The world’s largest butterfly sanctuary, which spans 24 hectares, is in Bolivia. It is located 20 minutes from downtown Santa Cruz, and is open 365 days a year.
A variety of amenities are available inside the sanctuary for the visiting guests. There are restaurants, bars, tent-camping facilities, bungalows, a resort hotel, picnic and barbeque areas, a huge are’s playground, biolabs and much more. You can spend weeks — not just days — inside the sanctuary without running out of things to see.
