News from Panther Headquarters

November 2018

Big picture

From the desk of the Principal...

Hello Panther Families –

It is once again my pleasure to correspond with our Panther Families. In the wake of recent tragedies not only within our school district, but ongoing situations all over the world, we want to ensure that we are doing all we can to keep our students safe and provide them with a positive, supportive climate. This includes not only physical safety precautions, but a focus on mental health within our school. A key component to any plan is the proactive, ongoing connections and collaboration with our stakeholders. I’d like to focus on a couple of ways we can coordinate with our families to provide an ongoing safe and positive climate and culture.

First of all, all families need to be aware of and know how to utilize our District "Text-A-Tip." Text-A-Tip is a program that allows students, parents or others to anonymously send a text or email message to our school resource officers and school administrators about concerns they may have for their own safety or the safety of others. Text-A-Tip will be actively monitored during and beyond the school day, and it can be found on the HIJH Website. Scroll to the bottom of the Home Page and click the red box entitled Safety for more detailed information. It should not be used for emergencies—Call 911 if you need immediate help. Texts can be sent to 274637 (or CRIMES). Start the actual message with the # symbol and a building-specific keyword: #HSIJH.

Secondly, HIJH will be hosting its inaugural HIJH Equity Café on Wednesday, November 7th at 7:00 PM in the LGI Room. The entire HIJH & Fishers community is invited to collaboratively discuss how to create a more equitable community and schools. These discussions can strengthen community and school relations, which as mentioned, is a key component to providing a safe and supportive climate. We hope to see you there!

Respectfully,

Tim A. Mankin

Early Dismissals and Returning to School

If you need to pick your child up from school early, please call the attendance line 317-594-4126 by 9 AM, the morning of dismissal. We will send a pass to your child and have them in the office at your requested time. You will need to come in the office and sign your child out. If your child is returning to school due to a Medical/Dental appointment and has their excuse slip, they can come in on their own and sign back in.

Address and Bus Changes.

Anyone requesting new bus transportation for their child, due to a move to a new home, MUST provide proof of residency to the attending school to make this change. Residency documents needed are posted on the corporation website under “For Parents” and “Enrolling Your Child,” Step 3, Residency Documents. Once documents are provided to the school, new bus information will be provided to you and will be available on Skyward within a 24-hour timeframe.

Counselor's Corner

HONOR ROLL postings are on the HIJH website! HIJH honor roll is located on the Home page of the HIJH website. https://hij.hseschools.org. Students receiving high honor roll have received no grade lower than an A-. Students receiving regular honor high honor roll have received no grade lower than a B-.

Planning for the Future. Getting one’s thoughts in order is a good start for planning the future. Simply sitting down with your child and asking, “What do you think you want to do with your life?” is a great way to start planning. Promote conversations that focus on where your child wants to be academically and what their career interests might be at this time. Take a half hour every other week to research some of the careers of interest discussed, as well as colleges, universities, and vocational school that support such careers. Simply open the door to future planning; you may be amazed at what you find!

Testing Dates to Note. Please mark your calendars to ensure your child is in attendance these testing periods.

ILEARN testing window - April 22 - May 17, 2019

It is extremely important that your child be in attendance and on time during these testing days. Please assist us by ensuring that your child is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast. Also, it would be advantageous to reschedule any appointments you have scheduled during these days. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this testing process.

November PTO Meeting. The next PTO meeting will be Friday, November 9 at 9:30 AM at the school. All parents are invited to join us.

Panther Rewards. HIJH families who link their Kroger card number to our school help earn our school money! When you use your Kroger card, a portion of the sale goes to our school. It’s an easy way to support the PTO without costing you (or your fuel points) anything! Go to kroger.com/communityrewards, click “I’m With An Organization…” then “Request Your Kroger Plus Card” and create an account or sign in. Find HIJH-PTO (WT583) and link your card to our account.

Amazon is another simple way to help our school money. Go to HTTP://smile.amazon.com/ and type HSJH PTO under “supporting”. You will need to go to smile.amazon.com each time (rather than use the app)- saving it under bookmarks makes it easy to use.

Thank you for your support of the PTO and those families who have already linked their accounts to our school! The more families who are linked, the more money the PTO earns - and it all goes back to the school!

Tyson Rewards and Box Tops. Keep clipping Box Tops and Tyson Rewards. Our next collection will be on November 14. Each student that brings in 10+ box tops/Tyson rewards OR a Kroger receipt showing at the bottom community rewards going to HIJH PTO gets a treat at lunch. Put all rewards in a baggie labeled with your student’s name, grade and teacher. Receipts need name, grade and 1st period teacher written on it. Contact Lisa Gruber with questions at gruber5@comcast.net.

Dine to Donate. Our next dine to donate is Monday, November 5 from 5-8 PM for lunch and dinner at FoxGardin Family. Click here for the Dine to Donate Flier and present it when ordering your food.

6th Grade Humanitarian Project

One of our Panther 6th graders will be collecting pop can tabs and donating them to the Ronald McDonald's Children's House to raise funds for that organization. Please collect any pop can tabs at your home and feel free to send them in with your student. Collection bins will be located in the lunch room and outside of room 248 where students can drop off any collected pop tabs. Thank you for your support of this student-led humanitarianism project.
