Cumberland, North Smithfield & Lincoln Prevention Coalitions
January 2018
And just like "THAT"...the first month of the new year is a wrap! The holidays are officially packed away for another year, and it is time to get back to work! New Year's Resolutions have either been forgotten or perhaps now become habit. We look forward to 2018 with hope, optimism and above all, gratitude! Our mission becomes all the more obtainable because of the tremendous support we receive from our communities!
“Without Valentine's Day, February would be... well, January." ~Jim Gaffigan
The ATI Crews give back to the community!!
Our amazing ATI Crews from both Cumberland & Lincoln spent the morning just a few days before the holiday break volunteering at the RI Food Bank. The students helped organize, prepare and pack food donations for individuals in need. Their selfless act certainly helped to spread "holiday cheer" as well as understanding the importance of giving back and making contributions to the community.
We are immensely proud of both "crews" and for all they have taught US!
Way to go, everyone!
Sunday is the BIG GAME! Let's celebrate....SAFELY!
Super Bowl Sunday is just days away! And our "Boys" have made us proud once again! And while it is an exciting time to be a New Englander, lets remember to keep it safe!
Are you hosting a party this year but don’t know how to manage with the kids around? Here’s some great Kid-Friendly Super Bowl tips to make sure your children are having a great time. Just remind everyone not to walk in front of the television.
Party Games Entertain the kids during commercials or halftime with some fun football games. They can play origami flick football, commercial bingo, or hut, hut, hike (same as duck, duck, goose). Additionally, create a separate space to play board games that’s appropriate for all ages. If possible, use an empty room to have a fun tournament with a video game system like the Wii. The children can pair up in teams depending on age and ability.
Team spirit: Temporary tattoos and face paint are fun ways to get the kids excited about the game. These items can be purchased at your local party store. Set up a small station as if you were tailgating. Play the team fight song as you get ready for the big game. Make sure they are wearing their team colors or jersey.
Fun food: What’s Super Bowl without great food? I always look forward to eating all the delicious treats. Make sure to provide snacks and meals for everyone especially picky eaters. Whip up some fun food that’s shaped like a football. Pinterest is a great source to find fun recipes. Kids love to move around a lot and don’t tend to eat when they are busy. Create a snack table where they can grab their own food. Chips, crackers and fruits are great finger foods for children.
Craft table: Set up a craft station for the kids. Put out football themed printables and crayons. Host a contest for the best picture and winner get a small prize. In addition to the printable activity, they can make diy pom poms or fingerprint football.
GO PATRIOTS!!!

Lincoln Prevention Coalition Monthly Meeting
Please Join us on Wednesday, February 21st 6:30pm at the Lincoln Public Library for our monthly Lincoln Prevention Coalition meeting!
The Lincoln Prevention Coalition is a community coalition of volunteers and professionals focused on reducing the substance use by youth through education, policy changes, media and strong community involvement. To help us achieve this goal, we reach out to leaders in business, community organizations, health, safety, local government, community leaders, parents and to students in our community by asking them to work with us on and with the coalition, especially now with the award of a federal Drug Free Communities Grant.
We will be discussing the Drug Free Communities Grant, as well as the many projects and activities planned in the upcoming months! Bring a friend!

Cumberland: A proactive approach to the growing national problem of vaping.
Kudos to the Administrators of the Cumberland School Department! On January 16th, presentations at the Cumberland High School focused on vaping & the dangers surrounding this prevalent problem with teens. We were honored to be a part of the discussion and the opportunity to present Hidden in Plain Sight to the 100+ adults present.
It is a HUGE concern among parents and educators alike for teens. We are repeating this information again in this issue to help parents identify and understand the varieties and complexities of vaping, as well as the dangers. Prevention and education go hand in hand. Thank you to the dozens of parents that are dedicated to educating themselves & continuing conversations with their teens to help prevent substance abuse!!
Check out the article in the Valley Breeze HERE about the evening!
In addition to the opportunity to be a part of the "Town Hall Meeting", The Cumberland Prevention Coalition also presented Hidden in Plain Sight at McCourt Middle School as well as North Cumberland Middle School.
This is the PUFFiT vaporizer, a portable unit that resembles an inhaler.
JUUL Vaporizers are becoming extremely prevelent with teens.
With its unique design profile, resembling a USB stick, it appeals to teens because of the flavor variety and lack of lingering smell, portable and easy to use and they consider it a satisfying alternative to cigarettes.
The replaceable "pods" are also being filled with marijuana concentrate oil. With a magnetic charger that can be plugged into a computer, teens are able to disguise this mechanism with ease.
