FIFTH GRADE NEWS
February 26- March 2, 2018
Spring Break Is Near
THANK YOU!
Last Friday was the last day for our Student Interns. Due to your generosity, we were able to gift both of them with a large basket full of wonderful school supplies to get them started in their first classrooms. The students also wrote them individual notes that were bound together in a book. Thank you for helping us shower Mrs. Munoz and Ms. Sutton with love and gratitude. It was a gift they very much valued.
Upcoming CTMS Dates
Wednesday February 28: Yellow Course Selection forms are due to homeroom teacher.
We know that there is a lot of stress and uncertainty around course selections. Here are our thoughts that could possibly help you in making these decisions.
On-level means that this is a course for students who feel that they are performing at their grade level in their content. This is a course for students that don't feel very independent in a certain content and might need some re-teaching and teacher support.
PAP or Pre-Advanced means that students are very confident in the content and are able to dig deeper with projects, extensions and high rigor activities.
Accelerated is a fast paced course that covers 1 and 1/2 years worth of that content in just one year. It's a high rigor course for students who feel that they are quick to understand concepts and are able to connect them and master them quickly.
If you have any other questions, please email any 5th grade teacher.

What's Happening In Class?
Science Matters
This week we are beginning our last strand of Science learning for the year: Force, Motion, & Energy 5.6ABCD. It will be much more hands-on than Earth and Space Science have been.
Uses of Energy is review for them so we will only take this week to complete the study. We will spend two weeks on Circuits and Electricity and two weeks on Light. Experimenting with Forces will take us one week to complete. Following this, we will be reviewing and reteaching our year of learning in Science.
Force, Motion, & Energy TEKS 5.6ABCD:
TEKS 5.6A Uses of Energy
TEKS 5.6B Circuits & Electricity
TEKS 5.6C Light
TEKS 5.6D Experimenting with Forces
What can you do to help your child at home? Ask them to tell you what they are learning in Science. Ask to see their Blendspaces in Google Classroom. Also, please utilize Stemscopes learning resources, games, and video glossary for review at home.
You will find vocabulary Quizlets, Blendspace activities, Slideshows, and Menu Plans in Google Classroom Mannen Science 2017-18 that will also be good for your child to review at home.
Math:
We just completed our unit on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. Our next Unit will be geometry and measurement.
(5) Geometry and Measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to classify two-dimensional figures by attributes and properties. The student is expected to:
(A) classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their attributes and properties.such as all rectangles have the property that opposite sides are parallel; therefore, every rectangle is a parallelogram.
(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand, recognize, and quantify volume. The student is expected to:
(A) recognize a cube with side length of one unit as a unit cube having one cubic unit of volume and the volume of a three-dimensional figure as the number of unit cubes (n cubic units) needed to fill it with no gaps or overlaps, if possible.
(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand, recognize, and quantify volume. The student is expected to:
(B) determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number side lengths in problems related to the number of layers times the number of unit cubes in the area of the base.
(4) Algebraic Reasoning. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop concepts of expressions and equations. The student is expected to:
(G) use concrete objects and pictorial models to develop the formulas for the volume of a rectangular prism, including the special form for a cube
(A) solve problems by calculating conversions within a measurement system, customary or metric.
Humanities:
Social Studies
Units 7: Westward Expansion (3 weeks)
Westward Expansion focuses on the idea of manifest destiny via the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, and the Gold Rush. Westward Expansion occurred early in our country’s history and we want to understand how this helped the United States expand beyond being only 13 states. Along the way, we will learn about the numerous reasons people had for making the move West!
Reading
Inferencing, drawing conclusions, and providing text evidence will continue to be important as we work through these units as well. With our benchmark out of the way, we can begin to focus in on specific reading skills in small groups and one on one with Mr. Wahpekeche. We will explore the elements of fiction, point of view, and continue to develop our comprehension in order to improve our ability to summarize.
Writing
Students will continue to utilize the writing process (brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, publishing) when developing expository essays, personal narratives, and persuasive essays, or informational essays. In addition, students will be working on writing informal and formal letters making sure to incorporate figurative and sensory language. We will spiral back to prepositions and prepositional phrases, subordinate conjunctions, and using proper punctuation.
