Family Newsletter- January 2023
Welcome back, Hello 2023!
We have a busy January ahead! Please take time to carefully read our newsletter, to ensure you do not miss anything! From Benchmark and Progress Monitoring testing, to Literacy Week events, the Book Fair and Grandparents Week...we are closing out Quarter 2 Seahorse Strong!...there is a ton of learning and fun scheduled!
We can't thank our PTO and families for all of the love and support during the months of November and December. Our faculty, staff, students and families all felt the sense of community at Sea Gate, thank you for making it so special!
Gratefully,
Ms. Kirby
School Counselor’s Corner
Happy New Year, Seahorse Families! I hope you all had a beautiful winter break making memories with your families and friends. I am excited to be back with our students and looking forward to the rest of the school year. Our seahorses will kick off the new year by reviewing our PBIS school-wide expectations (Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful) and our procedures as we get back into our routine after the long break. Consistent daily routines allow children (and adults) to feel in control of their environment by helping them understand what is happening next and what is expected of them. I know after that first day back we will jump right into the swing of things! We will celebrate our Students of the Month for December (cooperation) on Friday, January 6th. Our character theme of the month is self-control. Self-control is essential for helping us to stay safe, be successful, and create peace. We will be focusing on pausing before acting rather than being impulsive as well as thinking about our words and actions and then making choices that are right for us and for others. Some strategies we are learning include our traffic light (Stop, Think, and Act) and pausing, relaxing our body, and taking a deep breath. Continue the conversation in the car or at dinner time by discussing a family member who showed self-control, how self-control can help in sports, or what consequences would an adult or kid face if they did not show self-control.
Thanks for reading!

**Due to state testing from January 17th through January 20th, we ask that parents/guardians refrain from coming to school during the student lunch time. This ensures all students are prepared without distractions on their assigned testing days. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Attendance Reminders
Attendance Reminder: Please set the stage for your child’s success by ensuring they arrive at school on time each day. It is extremely important that your child be in the classroom before the second bell rings at 8:25 A.M. We highly encourage your child to arrive by 8:15 A.M., as this allows for time to get to the classroom and prepare for the day. It is equally important that your child remains at school for the entire day.
Excessive Absences: Please notify the school by 8:30 A.M. when your child is absent and inform us of the reason for the absence. When a student accumulates five (5) days of absences, the parent will be contacted by the school to discuss the reasons for the absences. When a student accumulates seven (7) days of absences, a letter documenting the record of absences will be mailed to the parent/guardian of the student. This letter includes information about Truancy Court. When a student is absent ten (10) or more days, another letter documenting the absences will be mailed to the parent/guardian of the student. A parent conference is scheduled with the principal and District Attendance employee.
January Lunch Menu
Celebrate Literacy
Happy New Year from the Media Center! I’m so excited to start the second half of the school year, talking to students about what they read over the break. We will be continuing read alouds with kinder and first grade, and the kindergarten students will be learning to shelf browse soon after we return.
January means it’s time to celebrate literacy! And what better way to celebrate than diving into reading with our Under the Sea Book Fair! The Book Fair adventure is January 23-27, to tie in with Celebrate Literacy, Florida! Week. We will be having preview days to come as a class, as well as shopping days throughout the week. More information, including the Book Fair flyer, will be coming soon. If you haven’t had a chance to use Scholastic’s eWallet for the book fair, it is a safe and easy way to provide your student with funds for the book fair. Here’s the link for Book Fair Information: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/sge
**Please note: the Scholastic eWallet is different from the MySchoolBucks lunch money account. Students are only able to spend what they have in their eWallet at the Book Fair. Please click the link above for information on how to create an eWallet account for your student.

Laptop care
As we start the second half of the school year, I wanted to provide some reminders about laptop care
Students should always transport the laptop IN THE CASE – between classes, to Technology class, everywhere they go
Students should not put their laptop in their backpack
Students should not put their laptop on the floor
Just like with library books, students should keep foods and liquids AWAY from their laptop
Students should make sure their laptop is fully on their table/desk – do not let it hang off the edge
Students should keep their charging cords close – cords are a tripping hazard
I understand that accidents happen, and damage can occur to the laptop. However, students are responsible for maintaining their devices, so if the laptop needs to be repaired, a fine will incur. Here are the costs of replacing damaged items:
Laptop Replacement Parts
- Power adapter - -$ 48.00
- Keyboard--$ 95.00
- Screen Touch/Non-Touch---$ 231.00 / $ 117.00
- Laptop Replacement---$ 587.00
Looking Ahead:
