Where is it located?

Djenne is located in Africa in the country of Mali. It is in the central part of Mali. The city is on the flood plain of the Niger and Bani Rivers. There are a couple cities near it, but the nearest is Mopti, which is 47mi. away from Djenne. Coincidental is that Djenne is located in the Mopti region. Amother city is Timbuktu, which is also pretty close. This is accessible from the river Niger and from land. On the land route it is 220mi. southwest of Djenne. Even though it is on a flood plain it is still 912ft. above sea level. One more option of looking at it is if you take a map it is at 13ºN. and 4ºW., or to be more precise it is 13ºN. 54' 20" and 4ºW. 33' 18" or translated 54ft. and 20in. and 33ft. and 18in.

History?

Djenne has a rich heritage of history. At one point it was considered a flourishing trade route, but this was stage in history was only between eighth century - eleventh century. Beyond that it was merely only a trade stop. There weren't people bustling around all the time. This was all fine and good until Djenne hit a speed bump in a road you could say. Everything started to decline. They had lost all trading that occupied there. There was droughts, war, and anything else the world could throw at them. Although it looked like it was going to fade away completely, there was a glimmer of hope. This was UNESCO, they were going to help them, and from there we are in the now.

Religion

Djenne is very religious. Their people are pretty much all Islamic or Muslim. That is why they are the center of the Islamic learning. A religious symbol of this region is the Great Mosque and the past mosques.

What is Islam?

Islam is the religion practiced in Djenne. It like Judaism is monothiestic. There one god is Allah, and like with Christinanity he brought down a messenger, and his name was Muhammad. He was believed to have been brought to life in the 7th Century. Now Islam or known as Muslim is the second largest religion in the world. Like the Christians and Jews they follow a code as well. This code is called the Five Pillars. The "pillars" are faith, prayer, fasting, alm, and pilgrimage. What these mean are that they are daily actions a Muslim must follow.

Importance

The Islamic religion is very important to the Djenne people. There are schools where young men and women can learn the Muslim religion. These schools are named Koranic schools. On the front of these schools you can see teachers or also known as marabouts in the front of their schools telling kids about the religion.In this case the people of Djenne are very friendly and open about the religion, but in one case people who are not Muslims are not aloud in the main building of the mosque.

Description of Great Mosque

The Great Mosque is an amazing sight. It is the heart of Djenne. It is the biggest mud brick building ever constructed. These mud-bricks are sun-baked and are called in Djenne, ferey. The Great Mosque was constructed in 1907 because of the French colonial administration. What is mosque? A mosque is a Muslim church

Description

In Djenne it is hot throughout the whole year. During the months of November-Febraury the average temperature is around thirty-six degrees Celcius. Then during the months of March-October the temperature is about 36.4 or 36.3 degrees Celcius. Also Djenne buildings are made mostly of mud.
