The Compass Rose: 3/10
Principal's Message
To the East Elementary School community:
It was another action-packed week here at East! We are so grateful for the enrichment opportunities provided by our PTO and our team of people responsible for making these experiences happen: Our Grade 1 students got to participate in a drum circle on Monday, Kindergarten spent some time with animals from the New England Wildlife Center on Tuesday, Grade 5 students sat in on a debate about school during a civics trip to the Edward Kennedy Institute on Wednesday, Grade 4 took a field trip to the Museum of Science on Thursday. Many thanks to those who contributed time or helped plan!
Parents, if possible, please indicate within Pick-Up Patrol if your student is participating in Explorers After-School Enrichment and will not be taking their default transportation. Thank you in advance.
- Mr. Hawes
MCAS Info Session 3/21
East Elementary administrators will be hosting an MCAS information session for parents in Grades 3, 4, or 5 on Wednesday 3/21 (7PM via Zoom). We will review the MCAS schedule and test-day logistics, provide an opportunity for parents to experience test content, and provide resources and information to best prepare you for your student's upcoming test sessions.
We will share the Zoom link and slides the day of the presentation.
Equity Survey
Parents, please find a survey intended for parents, guardians and caregivers that will help inform the district's ongoing equity work: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe0iGwiLibCZshmspU93xQhZc9l18p9EJd6xGuntbnrbnHlVg/viewform
The survey will take approximately 10-minutes to complete and is based on the RECIII framework, a tool that addresses the diverse needs of students with an emphasis on school climate and culture. Your input is appreciated!
Book Fair 3/28 & 3/29
The book fair will take place Tuesday March 28th - Thursday March 29th from 4:30-7PM
Note: we can expect big crowds on Wednesday when East is hosting a Night of Wonder event
Sign-up link if you're interested in volunteering during the book fair - please share with any friends you have who might be interested!
Smartwatches/Apple Watches
Parents, please partner with us in upholding the expectations for the use of electronic devices throughout the school day. Our expectations for electronic equipment is outlined in our Student Handbook (Pg 24: https://hinghamschools.org/east-elementary-school/files/2022/09/Elementary-Handbook-2022-2023.pdf)
"The use of electronic equipment that can include devices that can make or receive phone calls or text messages, such as cell phones, smart watches, etc. in school is not permitted as it can interrupt instruction or interaction with peers. Devices that are used solely for reading are allowed. All other devices should be off and in the backpacks"
If student concerns require immediate adult attention, students should utilize the staff available to them and we'll ensure they get the help/support they need.
DESE District & School Report Cards
Each year, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education provides families with district and school report cards designed to show families how the district and individual schools are performing. Please see the attached letter, which includes links to our report cards and information about our performance:
Makerspace Materials Needed!
Parents, please think of us when changing your next paper towel or toilet paper roll! Our Makerspace team is in need of cardboard paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls for their next project. If you're able to save them, please send them in with your student. There will be a collection box in the Main Office.
Thank you in advance!

Parents of Grade 4 students, please be sure to send an updated physical examination form from your pediatrician to Mrs. Shanahan, our school nurse. This is a requirement from the state of MA. Any physical examination done between March 2022 to March 2023 is acceptable.

Green Team
The Green Team is very excited about the success we've had with the launch of our lunchtime recycling program this week but we're realizing that we need another round of parent volunteers next week as well to keep up our progress. The students have been so receptive to our new recycling system but we would love to give them an extra week of hands-on guidance figuring out what gets placed where to really help their new habits stick. Please use the link below to sign up for a shift as a cafeteria helper if you are able!
