September 21-25, 2020; Semester I, Week 4
A NOTE FROM YOUR HUGHES MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS
HMS Parents and Friends,
Another week is about to begin and the middle school life is ramping up. Volleyball and football games, Cross Country meets, Spirit days, and yearbook sales are filling the calendar. WE just love middle school in the FALL! This week was the first week of sporting events where spectators were expected to social distance in the gym and wear a mask. Our spectators were awesome. Thanks for everyone who followed the protocols.
Speaking of changes, the athletic department is working to update and upload processes for allowing more volleyball spectators at the next home game. We have voiced our need for separate tickets for separate games in separate gyms. Next week, we are anticipating a new format for acquiring these additional tickets for our next home game.
This week is our first week of fall football! Whoop! Spirit days will be advertised and we hope all students will participate. Our game night is Tuesday night this year and we will be playing on our HMS home field. This is exciting for both 7th and 8th graders. The construction at HMS during the past two years made it impossible to play at home but our time has come! Parent of athletes, keep an eye out for additional changes and requirements of our athletes each week from your child's coaches.
Until next time,
Your HMS Administrative Team
OUR HMS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS & OFFICE STAFF
You may know them as Administrative Assistants, Secretaries, and/or Clerical Paraprofessionals. At HMS, we call them LIFE SAVERS!
Hughes Middle School is a "Melting Pot" of styles, backgrounds, and talents. The HMS administrative assistants and office staff provide the SALT, SUGAR, and HOT SAUCE to the mix. HMS depends on these ladies to inform, remind, and re-explain on a daily basis. With all of the twists and turns of this school year, our support staff has provided clarity and calm even when bumps are added to the road.
We are confident that you have found that same clarity and calm when you have inquired about a new twist or turn happening at HMS. These ladies have been so great to answer your questions, as well as pass along your questions to administrators and counselors, if they haven't been asked before. (You have asked a lot of great questions.)
We hope you will join us in celebrating these HMS heroes on your next call or visit to the school.
Thanks, Ladies,
for all you have done,
all you are doing, and.....
all you're going to do.

DRESS CODE UPDATE
So, due to the need to properly identify all students while on campus, IDs that look like the ID shown here, have been issued to almost every student on campus free of charge. We continue to update for new students each day. While MOST students are great at wearing their IDs on a lanyard around their necks each day, some are finding it hard to remember where it is and/or how to wear it. Parents, temporary name tags have been issued this week when students forgot their IDs.
Now, beginning next week, a $2 replacement fee will be assessed when a student does not present their identification. Each of us know that safety and security is paramount. Everyone on our campus must have proper identification. Occasionally, students have a hard time understanding why. So, we need your help explaining to them why they need to comply with this safety measure. Again, THANKS!

Virtual Learners and the MAP ASSESSMENTS beginning THIS WEEK
Virtual Learners, starting Monday we will be administering the Math and Reading Map test to all of our On Campus and Virtual students. Additionally, all eighth grade students will be taking the Science MAP Test. Teachers will be communicating through Schoology the dates in which students will be taking the MAP Test. As MAP Testing quickly approaches, we want to take a minute to inform you of the changes to remote testing for our virtual learners. The changes are as followed:
1. All virtual learners will need to attend their Math and English Language Art classes synchronously on the day you are taking the MAP Test. (Unless otherwise specified from your Math or ELA teacher)
2. Students will be accessing the MAP Test through a link provided by the teacher. Virtual Students will not be taking the MAP Test through the Chromebook Application.
3. Students will need to be in the Teacher’s Zoom Call to communicate any issues they may have during the test.
Below you will find a document that will provide you with resources to ensure students are prepared on the day of testing.
Please note that the MAP Test is a tremendous resource for our teachers as they continually work to develop quality instruction to target the academic needs of students.
We miss you all and please let us know if there is anything that we can do to better assist you.

BISD IGNITE
The BISD Ignite Speaker Series will take place virtually this year on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at 6 p.m.! The theme of the speaker series is “IGNITE Your Passion and Share!” This theme is purposefully broad and encompasses many subjects to allow students to speak on local, national and/or international topics, that may include social issues, education, technology, science, medicine, or any other subject a student is passionate about.
BISD IGNITE is implemented using the Discovery Education “IGNITE” format, whereby students speak for 5 minutes, from memory, about a topic of interest to them, a problem they want to solve, or a solution to a problem that no one has solved. Their speech is accompanied by 20 slides that advance automatically. The goal is to encourage students to engage in innovative thinking and inspire transformation.
Please share this information with your child, and let us know if we may provide additional information. More details to come on the virtual aspect of the event!
If your child is interested in participating in this event, please have them complete the BISD IGNITE registration form LINK: https://forms.gle/gv1uDYpm22wJ58if7
Student presentations must be received at the burlesonisd.ai@bisdmail.net email by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020 to be included in this event.
