4-H Enrollment
The new 4-H year begins in October. Families will be able to re-enroll on ne.4honline.com after October 16th. Families will need to re-enroll before they can be start participating in Shooting Sports practices later this fall.
Nebraska State Fair Results
This year at the State Fair, they only awarded Special Recognition awards. The reason behind this was to save money in judges and since many of the judges are elderly to protect their health during this time. Becca Reece received Special Recognition for her Weed Book.
Project Days Coming Soon!!
Starting in October we will have once a month project days during the school’s early outs. Some kids for project days are reverse canvases, leather projects, homemade wooden signs, crayon art, and more! Look for more details in October.
First Lego League
The 2020-2021 season is all about sports. The Replay season starts this fall and will go to the Sidney competition on January 30th. Please contact the Extension Office or Melissa Mracek at mmracek2@unl.edu if your child is interested in participating in robotics this season. To view the Kick-Off video visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxpXg5J5WdY&feature=youtu.be.
During the robotics season, youth will build and program a robot, learn about and develop an innovative solution around getting people active, and also learn how to work together as a team to complete challenges.
Horse Camp in a Box - Due September 30th!!
4-H youth still can participate in Horse Camp. The 4-H staff have created a Trail Map full of challenges for the youth to complete. The youth will be encouraged to practice Horsemanship, Reining, learning about Horse parts, creating horse treats, and other crafts for their horses. The Box will provide supplies for the crafts, such as horse treats, homemade fly spray, boot bag, and more. Participants will have the opportunity to have a horsemanship pattern evaluated by equine industry professionals. Youth can complete the horsemanship pattern at home and submit it to Evaluate My Ride at: https://4h.unl.edu/evaluate-my-ride. Once youth complete the Trail map, they will receive a prize. To show
completion of the Trail map, youth will need to take photos of them completing each obstacle on the Trail Map and send them to Melissa Mracek at mmracek2@unl.edu. The fee for the Horse Camp in a Box is $20 and is available for people who are 8 years old to adults. To register for your Camp in a Box please contact the Extension Office at (308) 668-2428.
If you have registered please send payment or stop by the office please!
Achievement Application
The Achievement Application is the new standard for State 4-H awards including selecting delegates for National 4-H Conference and National 4-H Congress, as well as Nebraska 4-H Foundation scholarships. There are two versions: a Junior version for 8 to 14 year olds and a Senior version for 15 to 18. Only the Senior version is eligible for state awards. This application can be used for county awards as well.
The Junior version has a maximum of 3 pages to describe their 4-H Experiences, Leadership Experiences, Community Involvement, and Career Spark. This new format falls more in line with the old Career Portfolios. They want you to describe your collective 4-H experience as the different projects involved in, skills learned, and number of years in the program. They also want you to describe your experience within this last year. They want you to specifically identify 2 program experiences which highlight your year.
In the Leadership Section they want you to identify your 4-H leadership experiences and what were the duties and responsibilities you had. The second part is to include your non 4-H Leadership Experiences. Again you need to list the duties and responsibilities you had.
The next section is your community involvement or service learning. For this area you need to describe two volunteer activities you participated in and what you did.
The last section is the Career Spark area. For this section, they would like you to describe how your 4-H experiences sparked an interest in a future career field. Maybe you took the Babysitting class and thought you might like to be a Preschool teacher. You can talk about how you babysat in your local county and what you learned from it.
For the Senior Application members get four pages to complete the previous information plus an additional page for the delegate application.
Creativity is highly encouraged; applications can use bullet lists, infographics, photos, etc. to help tell their 4-H story. The application is available as a PDF, Word Document, or Google Document. More information and the applications can be found at https://4h.unl.edu/achievement-application
These applications will be due to the County office by September 30th. Melissa will create a help video session to help families complete this application and will be available around the 1st of September.
Diamond Clover Awards
With the 4-H year ending, it is a great time check off your Diamond Clover goals and complete the application form. These awards are for all youth to apply for. It is not dependent on how well you do at fair. There are different levels for each age group, youth can only complete one level a year and can start at the level closest to their age. To apply for these awards, youth select a few goals to work on throughout the year, such as learning the 4-H Pledge, attending a 4-H camp, etc. This program is for youth ages 8 to 18, and is applicable to youth who participate in any delivery mode of 4-H even if they are not an enrolled 4-H member. For more information and the forms to complete the application visit: https://4h.unl.edu/diamond-clover.
