GIFTED TESTING
September 17, 2018
Dear Pickerington Families,
In accordance with the Pickerington Local School District assessment policy, second and third grade students will be administered whole grade testing for the purposes of the identification of gifted students. Second grade students will take the Otis Lennon (Cognitive Assessment) as well as the Stanford Achievement Assessment (Math and Reading). Third grade students will take the In View (Cognitive Assessment) as well as the Terra Nova Assessment (Math and Reading). The results of these assessments will be used to inform teachers of student achievement in comparison to national norms and to identify students as gifted and talented.
The testing window for second and third grade students will take place from October 15, 2018 through October 26, 2018. Each school will select specific dates to administer these tests based on their specific school calendars. We respectively ask that you do not schedule appointments during this testing window. Results of the assessments will be available once the scores are reported back to the district approximately six to eight weeks after the testing windows close.
If you would like more information regarding gifted services, testing, and parent resources, please view the Pickerington Local School District’s Gifted Education website. The website can be found at http://www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/gifted-services/
If you have any questions, please contact gifted services coordinator Todd Stanley at Todd_Stanley@plsd.us or (614) 920-6197.

The Pickerington Plan for Progress
Dear Heritage Elementary Community,
Pickerington Schools is developing The Pickerington Plan for Progress, a roadmap for the future that ensures we are attaining greater levels of efficiency, reaching a higher level of community trust, and graduating students that are prepared for today’s world.
The Plan for Progress will focus on three key goals:
Academic Excellence – What must we do to engage all our students in relevant and rich learning experiences that will prepare them for career, college, and life?
Efficient Operations – What can we do to maximize resources and ensure the district is operating efficiently?
Modern Facilities – Do our facilities reflect the environment needed to be successful in today’s world?
Our hope is to have our Plan for Progress completed this school year and for it to serve as a connection between schools and community that reflects resident and staff input, values, priorities.
We need your input to ensure our priorities match the priorities of our community!
Mr. Rice will hold an informal public presentation about the Plan for Progress on September 20th, during our PTO meeting. Parents and staff members are invited to hear about the Plan for Progress and discuss their ideas for the district’s future.
We also encourage you to visit our district website at www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/p4p/ to learn about the Plan for Progress. While there, click on the link that will allow you to take a brief survey in which you may share your priorities in the areas of academic excellence, efficient operations, and modern facilities.
Pickerington Schools also will hold two informal public events in September. At these events, the community is invited to hear about the Plan for Progress and discuss their ideas for the district’s future with our superintendent, Dr. Chris Briggs. The events will be:
6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Sycamore Plaza Branch of the Pickerington Library (across from Pickerington High School North.)
6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the main branch of the Pickerington Library (off Opportunity Way near Pickerington High School Central.)
We look forward to hearing from you and hearing your thoughts as we develop the Plan for Progress, which will pave the way into the future for Pickerington Schools.
Thank you!
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE
Dear Families,
The holidays are quickly approaching along with all the wonderful memories made during this special time of the year. The holidays are an enjoyable time with family and friends, however, that does not mean that they are not stressful! I realize some families may need some extra assistance providing a more memorable holiday for their children. Pickerington Schools are teaming up, once again, with the Violet Township Fire Department to help provide some holiday assistance for families in need during this holiday season.
For those out and about during the holiday season, you may see big red boxes throughout the community and in the schools. If you would like to donate a new toy/gift for the holiday season it can be placed in the big red boxes. Gift cards are also appreciated. If you would prefer to donate in other ways, please let me know.
If you would like a request form for holiday assistance this year, please contact me at marieca_mattox@plsd.us or (614) 548-1322. The request form will then be provided to you, only one per household please. This form is handled in a confidential manner; however, the information will be shared with local agencies. More details will be shared with those families requesting holiday assistance. The forms must be turned into a Pickerington school counselor by Monday, November 19th.
Best Wishes,
Marieca Mattox

Weekend Food Program
Violet Baptist Church
This program was created to help those families in need of meals for their children over the weekend. This is a wonderful program that helps those families in need within the PLSD.
What it is:
Food provided per student for 3 meals a day over Saturday and Sunday.
The food will be dropped off at the school office on Fridays.
The appropriate student will be notified and will come to retrieve their food bag.
We follow the school calendar & inclement weather schedule. No deliveries on Friday if no school. If we do know of a long weekend, we can arrange to drop for 3 days worth of meals. We have been approached by Mid Ohio Food Bank and have partnered with them to grow this program. Violet Baptist Church has volunteered to host the program and recruit volunteers from the community to join at VBC weekly to pack the food and distribute to the appropriate schools. Again, HOPE does not know whom the recipients are in order to keep strict confidentiality. If there is a food allergy we do identify that up front.
We keep strict guidelines on safety at the elementary levels for food prep. No food that needs a can opener, heat or microwave for little hands and safety. This changes for the upper levels. Also, we keep records for food safety and handling according to the standards set by the FDA and have completed training for such at Mid Ohio.
Lastly, this is no strings attached. Absolutely FREE for the student. If a household has more than one student, each student would receive a bag of food.
Please contact Marieca Mattox, School Counselor at Heritage Elementary School, if you are interested in this program or would like to learn more about it.
