Reading
Off to week 2 in Unit 3 we go. The essential question for the week is "How can one person change the way think?" Our story in whole & small group will be in the genre of historical fiction.
We will continue using the comprehension strategy of visualization and comprehension skill of cause and effect. Our stories this week have some figurative language-idioms to help the students visualize what is happening in the story.

Math
The students are ROCK'N perimeter and area. We have spent the past week working with these and will continue developing strategies for finding area and perimeter. Thanks to all of you who donated Cheez-Its because the students totally had fun learning and having a treat too. As of now, I have Unit 4 test on Friday.
Area
Learning about a square yard.
Finding the Area
Finding the area of a rectangle by using composite units.
Cheez-Its
Matthew finding the area and perimeter of the figure.
Science
We are finishing up with simple machines. This week the students will make their own simple machine book by illustrating/labeling each simple machine and including a description of the machines too. It is fun culminating activity.
Writing
The students received their pen pal letters last week. Boy, were they ever excited!! We immediately wrote our Morgan City friends back. The letters will go in the mail this week so they get them before they head off for Winter break. Hopefully by the end of January, we'll have another letter back from them.
As for our next writing focus, it will be opinion writing on a chapter book. Once we return from Winter Break, the students will select a chapter book to read, and we'll begin the writing process. But until then, we will practice a few opinion writing topics.
