When did it occur?

It occured in 79 A.D.

WHAT WAS THE CITY LIKE BEFORE THE EXPLOSION?

The area around the ancient city Pompeii had been used as a port by Greeks and Phoenicians even before the town was founded here. Although most towns in Campania were founded by Greek colonists, people that founded both Pompeii and Herculaneum were the Osci, Italic people of central Italy.

What was the name of the Mountain that exploded?

Mt. vesuvius.

It exploded and the whole city of pompeii was covered with harmful gas and debris was thrown miles.

WHY DIDNT PEOPLE LEAVE MT. VESUVIUS?

Many assumed their houses were strong enough to hold up against the volcano. Many inhabitants didn't know where to go.


WHO AND WHEN DID THEY FIND POMPEII?

Domenico Fontana stumbled upon the site accidentally. They started excavating March 23, 1748. But major excatvating didn't start until the 1900's.

DID ANYONE SURVIVE THE EXPLOSION?

There are people who survived from both Pompeii and Herculaneum, and there are extensive records from eye-witnesses who escaped or visited during the eruption phase which lasted several days.
