Socratic Seminar

Socratic Seminar is one of the teaching and learning styles that we practice during the year in PI. It involves a student-led discussion around a topic and can be used to explore books as well as other topics. Our first Socratic Seminar, learning in the style of Socrates, was a discussion about famous (or not so famous) quotes.

Students discussed quotes about attitude, persistence, and failure. The quotes by the students themselves were the most impressive! These quotes are hanging around our room now to remind everyone of the importance of these qualities and how they relate to learning. I think the theme of "persisting through failure" was one of the most important things we heard.

Ask your child about the Socratic Seminar and what he/she learned there.

Response Quotes from PI Students

4th Grade PI

4th graders are studying poetry. They have learned new vocabulary including the elements of poetry and found examples for each. Our poetry unit will include reading many types of poems as well as writing some poetry.

5th Grade PI

5th graders will begin their first novel next week. This novel study will include the whole class reading one novel, practicing using the new PI comprehension strategies. The title of our first novel is top secret!
