PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
Well known comedienne, Carol Burnette, ended her variety series, The Carol Burnette Show (I’m dating myself), each week by signing off with “I'm so glad we had this time together just to have a laugh, or sing a song. Seems we just got started and before you know it comes the time we have to say, 'So long.'” Well it’s finally that time. So long to the “Engaged Learning at Home'' Initiative. It’s time to say “So long” to crowded inboxes. “So long” to texts from multiple teachers. “So long” to sharing your personal laptop with two of your kids. “So long” to pouty kids who were resistant to what the adults needed them to do.
Many headaches, tears and frustrations later, we have completed our mission. We wanted to provide our students with the best “Forward Learning” experience we could possibly provide. We wanted it to meet our expectations and yours. How could we possibly have expectations for something we’ve never done? We all have high expectations for Hoover City Schools. That will never change whether we’re in the classroom or at home.
Our teachers, students and parents rose to the occasion. Personally, I am extremely proud and awed by what was accomplished. So many sacrifices have been made with one goal in mind…to move our students forward. In the process, we provided a measure of normalcy and as an unexpected by-product, we secured an even greater partnership between home and school.
We will continue to keep you informed as we learn what the Fall holds for us. I encourage you to keep an eye on Gov. Kay Ivey and Dr. Eric Mackey. Both leaders have made every effort to work collaboratively and to keep us informed. Our bumpushelp@hoover.k12.al.us email address will continue to be open if you have questions. Our website will be updated frequently with up-to-date information. Our office phones will be manned during June and July from 9:00 - 3:00, Monday - Thursday. And as always, we’re all just an email away. Coaches and sponsors will provide me with information to pass on regarding workouts and activities. We will be following the guidance of the ALSDE, AHSAA, and HCS.
Report cards will be mailed late next week. You will see three new markings. A fourth nine weeks, semester and year-long grade of a Pass (P) or Fail (F). High school courses will have numerical grades. If you still have Bumpus items (textbooks or library books), please get those in as soon as possible. We will no longer have the curbside pick-up for locker contents and chromebooks. You will have to come into the building through the front door.
We missed out of many activities and events due to the quarantine. We are sharing photos of the joyous occasion of each of our Finley Character Recognition Award recipients receiving their medals and certificates. We were able to hold Show Choir and Dance Team auditions virtually. The selected individuals are listed in the bulletin.
If you want to keep the skills of your child sharp during this break, we will be providing recommended IXL lessons for both Math and Language Arts. Keep yourself physically fit by continuing to stay active as your PE coaches have encouraged you to do throughout this time at home. Practice your band instruments and sharpen your foreign language skills by engaging in conversation with others. Additionally, to keep you healthy and strong breakfast/lunch meals will be served at the GVES, Berry, Bumpus, and Simmons carpools for children 18 and under, M-F, 11:00-1:00 throughout the summer.
I wish you the best. I still miss you all and hope to see each of you in a more familiar setting in the near future. To my departing 8th graders, represent us well at HHS. Be a leader. Champion a right cause. Make a positive difference in someone else’s life. We hope you enjoy our Eighth Grade Celebration Video put together by our yearbook sponsors, Mrs. Amy Corbitt and Mrs. Jennifer Jones.
Be well.
Dr. Tamala R. Maddox
Textbooks and Library Books
All textbooks and library books must be turned in by Friday, May 22nd. You can drop them off at the front office Monday - Friday (5/18-5/22), from 8-3 pm. We will also accept them through carpool on Monday 10:30 - 12:30. ALL STUDENTS ACCOUNTS will be put on HOLD if their textbooks or library books are NOT turned in and accounted for. This includes rising 9th grade accounts for HHS.
REFUND CHECKS
Some of you may receive a refund check from Bumpus in the next few weeks for field trips that were cancelled, etc. Some of you may be holding onto a check you received from Bumpus over the last year for a schedule change or other issue.
Please note that our checks are tied to the student’s record so the check is made out to your student. Please have your student sign the back of the check and then take it to the bank to cash or deposit as soon as possible.
Yearbooks
We hope to receive the yearbooks sometime in June. We will communicate the distribution method once it is decided upon.
BumpusHelp
We have a dedicated email address that will be responded to by our Communication Team (bumpushelp@hoover.k12.al.us). This email address will continue to be responded to until we are back on campus on a more consistent basis to answer the telephones.

Hoover Public Library News
The Hoover Public Library has valuable resources. Here is a message from Katie Jane Morris at Hoover Public Library.
HPL is here to support our librarians, educators, students, and families during these unusual and often difficult times. Please help us spread the word!
Hoover Public Library WEBSITE
http://www.hooverlibrary.org/
This gives you access to our downloadable services, Katie Jane's daily blog post (which is filled with resources), and the help form. This is the best way to get fast answers from the library regarding important issues -- getting and using a library card, downloading digital resources, finding resources for children, getting book recommendations, using technology, doing online research, and more. A person simply gives their name, number, email, and request, and a staff member quickly provides an answer.
