In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Purpose of Education
"It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: the one is utility and the other is culture. Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.
Education must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for one’s self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this point, I often wonder whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically. Even the press, the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths. To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.
The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals. . .
We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. The broad education will, therefore, transmit to one not only the accumulated knowledge of the race but also the accumulated experience of social living.
If we are not careful, our colleges will produce a group of close-minded, unscientific, illogical propagandists, consumed with immoral acts. Be careful, “brethren!” Be careful, teachers!"

The Culture and Discipline Task Force will be sending you information regarding the ClassDojo audit in the coming days. Remember, we should all only have 5 skills (3 schoolwide + 1 class custom + 1 grade level custom) weighted at 1 point. The same 5 skill should be reflected in “Needs Work” and weighted at 0 points. Flood your class story as we head to break!

Culture Reminders
Shout out to Ms. Dean for her utilization of the wonderful videos found in ClassDojo. This video was entitled “The High Dive” it addresses big challenges and demonstrates how students can take small steps to take on big challenges.
- We had 3 playground incidents this week! Students can not be effectively supervised from the top of the hill. Please select an area of the field for a better vantage point and proximity. If kids are down the hill playing, you should be as well. Also, remember that the punitive withholding of recess must be approved in advance by administration.
- Great job with this week’s earthquake and fire drill. We got out of the building in record time.
- Our next drills will be the week of February 10th. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Culture Resource of the Week
This is a great Kid President video to use in your class and it could spark a great discussion. It’s rooted in love and kindness. At the end maybe have kids come up with their own ideas about something kind that should be said more often or to pick their favorite from the 20 in the video. (Let’s hope they don’t all pick number 5!) Be sure to turn any unkind and hurtful language you hear from students into a teachable moment.
