Leader in Me Newsletter
What is Leader in Me?
PCM is proud to be a Leader in Me School. Leader in Me is an evidence-based PK-12 model, developed in partnership with educators and designed to designed to build leadership in students, create a high-trust culture, and improve academic achievement.
Leader in Me focuses on developing the whole child by:
- Teaching leadership to every student.
- Creating a culture of student empowerment.
- Aligning systems to drive results in academics.
Leader in Me uses two frameworks to create and grow a leadership school:
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People helps us learn and apply leadership skills and gives us a common language for building a supportive school environment.
- The 4 Disciplines of Execution helps us to identify, track, and achieve academic and personal Wildly Important Goals (WIGs).
What does Leader in Me look like at school?
PCM Elementary students will focus on Leader in Me lessons daily at the beginning of the school day. This dedicated time for every classroom will give them opportunities to discuss the 7 Habits and participate in activities to understand them even more!
Each month, PCM Elementary students will also focus on learning about and practicing one habit. We'll start with Habit 1: Be Proactive in October. In this monthly newsletter, we'll share information about each habit, how students learned, and ways you can support your student's learning at home.
This year, we are excited to take the next step as a Leader in Me school by looking at three specific aspects of our schools: Environment, Culture, and Academics. Our staff members signed up for teams to find enriching ways to improve each aspect of Leader in Me. We'll share those updates in this newsletter as well so you can see all of the happenings at PCM Elementary!
And, finally, our biggest announcement: This year we will be implementing Student Lighthouse Teams. Students will be able to apply for jobs around our school and then demonstrate their leadership skills as they carry out their duties. We are in the beginning phase of this project and will share more information with families soon!
Here is an example of a discussion slides students would engage in during our Leader in Me lessons. They talk in partners and share ideas aloud with the class.
Kindergarten showing how they can synergize. Together is better!
We are beginning to add elements of Leader in Me to our hallways and classrooms to encourage leadership from all students!
What can families do at home to help students?
This month, we encourage families to take some time to talk about leadership. This could be during dinner, in the car, or anytime you find is a good time to connect with your student. Here are some questions to get your conversation started: What does leadership look like at home? At school? Out in the community?
Talk with your child about these things and encourage them to show leadership everywhere they go! Everyone can be a leader!
What next?
Each month we'll send this newsletter out so you can learn about the Leader in Me lessons your students have been practicing. Starting in October, our students will learn about Habit 1: Be Proactive.
