What's "Growing" On @ Cannon?

Staff Information & Updates 03/21/16

From the Principal's Pen...

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Spring Break and took time to relax and recharge, as we move forward into some of the busiest weeks of the school year!

Speaking of a busy week....this week will be no exception! On Tuesday, March 22nd, the GHS STEM Design Team (teachers, administrators, & parents) will tour both GMS and Cannon's STEM programs, in order to learn more about the foundation of STEM education that has been established in the district, as they begin to plan for STEM to continue in 9th grade at GHS, beginning the 2017-2018 school year. Also, GCISD administrators will host a 2016 Bond Information meeting for Cannon & Silver Lake families at Cannon on Thursday, March 24th from 6:00-7:00 pm in the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for parents to come learn more about the 2016 Bond package and have any questions answered by district officials. Please help promote this event in all of your parent communications this week. Additionally, on Thursday, 3/24, I will be hosting another Principal's Coffee in the library from 8:00-9:00. Please encourage your parents to attend this informal opportunity to chat & discuss topics of interest to our school community! Finally, Friday, 3/25, will be the final day for parents in the community to submit an application for their child to attend Cannon's STEM program next year.

Thanks for your help communicating and supporting our school community!

Proud to be your principal,

Tona :)

It's that time of year when we start planning for staffing needs for next year. ALL STAFF is asked to complete the following staff assignment form. Please submit this by Friday, March 25th at 4:00 pm.

Who wants to shed a few pounds before we hit the beaches this summer ( or maybe just the pool?) Join the Cannon's STEM (Stay Trim Exercise More) Weight Loss Challenge!

Bring Nurse Kendra your $20 dollar admission fee (cash please) and start working towards losing those pounds! We will do the challenge for 10 weeks total. At the end of the competition the top winner receives 70% of the money collected, 2nd place 20% and 3rd place 10%. The first weigh-in will be this Monday, March 21st and the next weigh-in will be Friday, April 1st, this gives every one 2 weeks to get a jump start, and weigh-ins will be every Friday until Thursday, May 26nd and then the big winner will be announced. We will weigh in every Friday before school between 7:30 and 7:45 in the nurse's clinic on the same scale. (No one will see your weight except Nurse Kendra). You must have your money to participate in the first weigh in. If you miss a weigh-in (unless you are absent that day) you will be charged a $2 penalty. Last year, Nurse Kendra called to remind staff to come weigh in, but this year, there will be no reminders - you are on your own!! We are getting serious this year!!

See you Monday at 7:30!! Let Nurse Kendra know if you have any questions.

  • IMPORTANT REMINDERS ABOUT SPECIALS & HALLWAYS Prior to Spring Break, Deborah, on behalf of all of the Specials teachers, sent out an important reminder about the importance of promptness when picking scholars up from specials classes. As a reminder, it is critically important that all students are dropped off AND picked up on time each day. Please make sure there is a grade level teacher waiting at each Specials classroom at the end of your grade level specials time. It is not possible for the Specials teachers to delay bringing their next group of scholars into their classrooms or to escort your scholars back to your classrooms. Additionally, please ensure that your teams are working together to control the noise levels in the hallways during passing periods. Your help in remaining diligent and considerate of other colleagues in the building, by sticking to schedules & monitoring noise levels, is greatly appreciated!!

  • STAAR SPECIFIC TRAINING ON MONDAY Any staff member that will be administering STAAR assessments during our first round of STAAR testing on 3/29 & 3/30 for 4th grade writing and 5th grade reading and math must attend STAAR specific training on Monday, 3/21 at 3:00 in the library.

  • REPORT CARD GRADES REMINDER As a reminder, the posting window for grades for the 3rd nine weeks will close at 4:00 pm on Monday, 3/21. Report cards will post on Skyward Family Access on Wednesday, 3/23. Please be sure to enter all grades for this 9 weeks within grading period 1/5-3/11. If a grade has an assignment date after 3/11, it will appear in the column to the right and will not average with the current 9 weeks grades.

  • CHANGES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DAY, BEGINNING 2016-2017 Due to the new legislation passed by the State, there will be some changes made to the student-teacher calendar in GCISD. Currently, our elementary school students have 72,840 minutes of instruction, which does not meet the new requirements of HB 2016. By adding fifteen minutes to each elementary school day, this will allow GCISD to meet the state standard of instructional minutes. Additionally, GCISD will be extending the high school day by 5-minutes to meet the new requirements. The middle schools already receive the required instructional minutes so their day will not require an extension. The new start and dismissal times are impacted not only by the change in the required instructional minutes but also by the resulting shift in the transportation schedules. The new times, effective 2016-2017 school year will be:

Elementary School 7:40 a.m. - 2:55 p.m.

Middle School 8:10 a.m. - 3:25 p.m.

High School 8:40 a.m. - 3:55 p.m.

In an effort to minimize the impact of HB 2610 to the elementary schools, the district will also reduce the number of early dismissal days from 6 to 4 days.. Instead of the elementary schools having two early dismissal days in each semester for student-led conferences, there will now be one per semester.

  • GCISD KINDNESS DAY The district is excited to announce it's second GCISD Kindness Day on April 6! While we celebrate random acts of kindness in our schools year-round, this is a special day designated to bring attention to the positive impact even a small act of kindness can make and also to help us gear up for the district-wide Rachel's Challenge Rally on April 16. In celebration of GCISD Kindness Day, students and staff across the district are encouraged to wear a Rachel’s Challenge shirt as a reminder to spread kindness throughout the day. If you are in need of a shirt, you can order one through Emberly Hill in Counseling Services. Shirts cost $7 each. Email emberly.hill@gcisd.net by 3 p.m. on Friday, March 25 to place your order.
