Mid-Year Testing is Happening in Classrooms Now
This week, our students are finishing up their mid-year assessments in reading and mathematics. This important data helps teachers plan for instruction for the second semester by allowing them to see what our students already know, understand, and are able to do. The teachers then plan for lessons that help build from that knowledge base to achieve their grade level expectations and beyond. Children in all grades participate in Acadience testing in reading and mathematics by working directly with their teacher. Students in grades 2-5 also take the NWEA MAP assessment which is a computer based assessment which compares their progress with students across the nation. This is how we ensure as a school and a district, that our instructional program is helping your child become a successful learner.
Partner Classrooms Build Academic Language & Vocabulary Together
What have we been up to this winter? Partner classrooms! At CES, we are pairing upper grade classrooms with younger grade classrooms to learn about important vocabulary that our students will work with each and every year and are also important for accountability testing. Vocabulary terms such as demonstrate, descrobe, compare, and analyze are terms that students need to know and need to be directly taught. Our older students also have to understand these terms and expectations around the words in order to teach them to younger students. What does this look like? For January, partner classrooms learned about the word describe and how people use all of their senses to thoroughly describe something. In the pictures above, Ms. Schinault's class was paired with Ms. Thompson's class to accurately describe popcorn before enjoying the treat together. Once the words are taught, they are posted in both English and Spanish in the classrooms so that students remember this experience and what it means to describe something in detail. Students look forward to these montly opportunities as we reinforce AVID academic language vocabulary and our students gain experience in public speaking. This process has built confidence in our students and helped us to continue to develop the strong sense of community within our building and within our students.
