Hungry Helpers

The Van with a Plan -Group 7

The Issue

Our issue is Families in Hunger. This issue is important to our group because it effects so many people in Waco. Sadly, there is a shocking rate of 30.9% of families with poverty in Waco. Also, 20% of residents in McLennan County have food insecurities. Many of them are not homeless, but are hungry. Some families in poverty may not have jobs because they may have disabilities or mental illnesses. Also, they may have jobs that pay low wages. This affects the adults and the children. If the kids do not have enough food, they will not be able to do as well in school as they would if they had food. This can cause the children to have a higher chance of poverty when they grow up.

Take Action

GOAL STATEMENT

Our goal is to help hungry families by making a mobile food pantry. The food pantry will drive around and give all families in need food. Once we start to get more popular we will host events so the entire community can come and eat, too.

WAYS TO TAKE ACTION ON A PERSONAL LEVEL

We can help on a personal level by donating food to food banks or just giving the food to hungry families we know of.

WAYS TO TAKE ACTION ON THE LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVEL

We can help on a local level by feeding the hungry and cooking food for everyone. We can also get sponsors such as grocery stores and food pantries.

WAYS OTHERS CAN TAKE ACTION ON THIS ISSUE

Some ways other people can take action on this issue is by donating money, food from your pantry that you don’t need, participating in activities and events in your community, or by volunteering. You can also help by spreading the word to your family and friends and by posting it on social media. Ways you could do this on your own is by going and giving people on the street a snack or meal so when we aren’t serving them, you can be helping them.

Our Menu

Our plan is to deliver food by creating a mobile food pantry. We want to make our food pantry accessible for hungry families. We will begin by serving only canned food and prepacked food. Then when we get the word around we will start serving hot food and canned food. We will serve things such as:

  • Canned fruits and vegetables

  • Soups

  • Sandwiches

  • Snacks

  • Water

  • Bread

  • Salad

  • Pasta
