URCEO Family Newsletter
April 16, 2021
Dear URCEO Families,
It's been a busy week as we welcome our new students! We hope you have had a chance to connect with your new teacher(s) and classmates. If you are still trying to make sense out of the new routine and procedures, please do not hesitate to reach out to the office support team. We are here for you! If you get the voicemail, please include your name and a good call back number so we can follow up with you.
We have less than two months left in the school year! Normally we are prepping for state testing around this time, but our district has determined it is in our students' best interests to defer this year. Details were shared in a press release on April 5th. You can review it here. If you want your child to participate in the state assessments this spring, the opportunity will be provided upon completion of the “opt-in” form. The form is posted on the district website. Testing must be completed in-person.
Our teachers are excited to engage your child in exploring the outside world, developing their language skills, and delving into new learning this final term. This last stretch matters more than ever, so thank you for keeping your child positive about school and partnering with us. Together we can do virtually anything!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Green

What's Happening In Our Classes
Elementary
Grades 2 & 3 with Mrs. Harris
Our 2nd graders are working on an activity on ReadWorks called Meaning Mapper. This activity helps students build word connections between the different articles that they read for Article-of-the Day. Students add to the map after reading each day's article. The words connect to words they have chosen from previous articles. This week, the 2nd graders are reading about different types of pollinators.
3rd graders are working on summarizing articles using key details. The graphic organizer is used to help students write the final summary. This week, 3rd graders summarized an article about Elizabeth Hamilton.
Grades 2 & 3 with Mrs. Ritchie
Grades 4 & 5
Fourth and fifth graders in Mrs. Funk-Morales' classes have been working on the basic needs of plants. They started experiments to examine the effects of light, soil, and liquid on the plant growth.
Middle School
AVID
Sixth Grade Social Studies
6th Grade Science
Traditionally, the 5th -grade class participates in the annual Nature Connections Outdoor School, however, due to the pandemic, the activity was canceled last year. This year, funds have been
made available to give the, now 6th -Graders the opportunity to experience this great opportunity.
Mr. Petery has posted the brochures on the Announcements section in the Canvas classroom. If you have not yet done so, stop by URCEO to pick up your FREE Naturalist Kit. The first session this Tuesday via Zoom was loads of fun so be sure to join in on the activities with your friends and classmates!
8th Grade Language Arts
High School
In Language Arts this week, Mr. Trinca's students are beginning to read Lord of the Flies in 10th grade and Catcher in the Rye in 11th. Students learned about the background of both authors in addition to reading the first three chapters. They found it interesting that both authors were combat veterans in World War II, William Golding a Naval Commander for the British and J.D. Salinger an Infantryman for the U.S. Army. Both were part of the D Day invasion and both wrote these books because of their experiences in war.
