Mrs. Drudy Hits the Iditarod Trail!
Soon I'll be en route to Anchorage, Alaska for the 2019 Iditarod Winter Conference for teachers! During my stay there I will be--of course--collaborating with teachers all across the nation to learn new and exciting approaches to teaching and learning. As an added perk, the weekends before and after have allowed me to both take in the ceremonial start of this year's race and the opportunity to mush (drive) a team of dogs at the kennel of 5-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser, the musher who Quinn has decided to follow. This has been a bucket list item of mine for a long, long time.
Your child is in very good hands with his/her guest teacher. Thank goodness technology will allow me to share about these experiences with the kiddos! I am hopeful that I'll be able to blog about my adventures, and if this works out as planned, I'll surely be sharing the Internet link with you so that you can assist your child with these shared experiences. Because there is a five-hour time difference, connecting live with my class might be difficult--if not impossible.
Our guest teacher will not have access to my e-mail or my phone voice mailbox, so if you have an urgent message, please contact the office. I will be back on March 4th...and it's game on! The race will be in full force, and your child's data collection begins.
eLearning Day
I really feel as if our first eLearning Day was an astounding success! I hope your child had much fun learning the material as I did preparing it for them. As I've looked through the work done at home, I have to thank you all over the place! The support that you gave your child is more than apparent. You're the best! We would certainly welcome any feedback you might have about this day. We as educators try to live by the mantra we share our students, "As good as we are, we can always get better!" We have a few students who have not yet turned the bag in. Remember, this is due by this Monday. Failure to return the work will result in a day of absence.
Homeroom Husky
We had a guest today, and I'm guessing you've already heard all about it. Thor, a Husky belonging to the Garwood family came to show us up close and personal about all of those adaptations that sled dogs have. It was amazing to sit back and watch the students tell our guests all of the things they know about sled dogs and their ability to survive in their (sometimes) harsh environment. Mr. Josh Garwood is a school board member, and it always pleases me to have my students share their learning with our leaders. We are appreciative, indeed!
Northern Lights
Speaking of bucket list items...As many times as I've been to Alaska, I've never seen the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights. However, using an adapted Steve Spangler science lesson, we were able to replicate the effects as we made northern lights in a bowl. Here, we tested various liquids and learned about mixtures and solutions to create the northern lights effect! This long-term experiment will ultimately result in some crafty sun catchers to adorn our classroom windows. Check out the photos below.
Looking for some full out relaxation? Click here to watch a real-time video from Nature Relaxation Films. Here is a synopsis/explanation of the simple chemistry experiment the Spangler Effect.
Rada Fundraising
If you sold Rada products for our PTO-sponsored fundraiser, please find instructions for picking these items up in your child's folder today.
Next Week's Share Topic
Some people believe that “if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb (and vice versa).” Do you have an interesting experience to tell about any type of weather? Perhaps you were outside as a terrific thunderstorm was brewing. What do you do on the hottest day of the year? Maybe you know someone who has experienced a hurricane or tornado. Tell us all about it.
