Gag Resolution
1836
Southern Anti-Slavery
Pro southern congressmen passed the "gag resolution" yesterday, which prohibits all discussion of slavery in the house of representatives. The house will no longer be able to take action on anti-dlavery appeals. The southerns argued that it will help avoid arguments within the government.
Northerners disagree
The Northern congressmen are very upset with the gag resolution because it is putting a stop to the productivity of abolition movements and they feel that it takes away their tight to freedom of speech in the first amendment. As result, this resolution is heightening the problem of slavery instead of getting rid of it.
