Mathematicians:
Week 1 donations= 209 pounds!
Week 2 donations= 601 pounds!
The record for RMCS is 912 pounds.
How many more pounds do we need to break the record?
We have one more week to go. Let's donate more than ever before!
Week 11 Announcers
We have had 11 weeks of school. That means 22 fifth graders have had the opportunity to help Mrs. McD. with school announcements each morning. They are leaders with big responsibilities.
Every morning, announcers deliver a script from their 5th grade teachers to the main office. They decide who will read each message and practice reading the messages with Mrs. McD. before making the announcements over the loud speaker. Next, they raise the flags with Mr. Kolbenson. They visit classes to recognize every student who celebrates a birthday that week, and they lower the flag each afternoon. They are professional and articulate. I'm so proud of our 5th grade announcers!
Thank you for helping me with these responsibilities. Every 5th grader will have an opportunity to become an announcer, and I can't wait to work with each of you in the future.
Thank you, Chris Waddell!
Chris Waddell visited RMCS on Monday. He shared about a life-altering ski accident and how he responded, creating an opportunity for himself to be one of the best paralympic athletes in the world. Students learned about resilience, how to overcome obstacles, and how to turn unexpected challenges into accomplishments. He taught our children, "It's not what happens to you, it's what you do with what happens to you!" Chris donated a copy of his children's book, Is it Lonely to be a Four Leaf Clover? to the RMCS library, and one lucky student got to take a signed copy home. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your life experiences and for teaching our students such important lessons about embracing a growth mindset and never giving up, despite great challenges.
SB Rotary Club Presents a Gift to Every Third Grader!
Every year, the South Burlington Rotary Club promotes literacy by donating dictionaries to all 3rd graders in South Burlington. After presenting the dictionaries, students had fun using all of the resource tools in their student dictionaries. This particular dictionary has a wonderful resource section including the Sign Language alphabet, information about states and countries, a multiplication chart and many other helpful tools. Third graders then used their dictionaries to look up words, like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! A very special thank you to the South Burlington Rotary Club for their annual donation of a dictionary for each of our third graders.
Do you like bugs?
Our students are fascinated by them! Jim Talbot, from the UVM Natural History Museum, visited RMCS to do a presentation on insects for the whole Kindergarten team. Not only is he an expert on all types of bugs, he is also a grandparent to one of our kindergarten students. Thank you, Mr. Talbot, for sharing your knowledge about insects with our RMCS littles!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE DURING THIS RESPIRATORY ILLNESS SEASON Dr. Rebecca Bell is a Pediatric Critical Care Physician at the University of Vermont Children's Hospital and President of Vermont Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
What You Need to Know About RSV, Flu and COVID Right Now can be read HERE.
Dr. Bell's Question and Answer Video can be seen HERE.
How parents/caregivers can protect their children against respiratory viruses:
"First and foremost, we should take the lessons we learned during the pandemic and remain vigilant about any symptoms of illness. If you’re sick, stay home. Even if you test negative for COVID-19, you could still be carrying a contagious virus that puts people at risk."
Can my child go to school if they are sick and tested negative for COVID?
"Children and adults should stay home from work, school or childcare if they are feeling sick, regardless of the cause. Transmission to others is higher early on in the course of illness so staying home in the first few days will help limit spread. In many cases, a cough can linger past the point of being infectious. Frequent handwashing and mask-wearing can also help reduce transmission."
Influenza-like illness is showing up in Vermont.
Now is a good time to get the FLU VACCINE.
Children 6 months and older can get their influenza vaccine at their doctor's office, pharmacies or through state walk-in clinics.
