Falcon Flyer
Week 18 (January 13th- January 17th)
Principal Message
I hope your Monday has started off great and that you had a restful weekend. Here are a few reminders as we move into the work week. (Why is it hot and no snow in sight.....????)
2nd nine weeks ends this Friday. Grades are due January 24th by 4:00 for the traditional calendar. Ten minor and 4 major must be in the grade book for all courses. No exceptions!
NC Check-ins will be given January 23rd (Reading) and January 24th (Math). A schedule will follow toward the later part of this week.
Lesson plans are due by 8:00 on Monday morning as these will be looked at weekly now that we are moving into the second quarter. Expect to receive comments on these.
The 2nd Round of observations for comprehensive and standard evaluations are in process and will be completed and signed off by January 15th. Please check your email for post-conference invites that will be held in your classroom.
Two mid-year reviews remain to be completed and those are scheduled for tomorrow. Thank you for completing this process in a timely manner. Remember to collect artifacts to show for completion of these goals by the end of the school year.
As many of you know, Mr.Baker-Nicholas is out of work due to medical reasons. Because of this, he is requesting voluntary shared leave. If any of you would like to donate days in the form of annual, sick, or bonus leave please complete a voluntary shared leave form with Mrs. Hawley. She will then fax this form to Human Resources. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness in this matter.
It's that time again in Granville County Schools where we nominate our colleagues for the Employee Excellence Award. Spend a few minutes this week and nominate someone who really matters to you! I am attaching the link here. The Excellent Employee Award is awarded once yearly in recognition of employees who have inspired others through their commitment to excellence and achievement for all. Any full or part-time employee may submit a nomination. Employees may submit more than one nomination. The DEADLINE for submitting nominations is Friday, January 31, 2020. Nominations should be based on the district's guiding motto, "Commitment to Excellence and Achievement for ALL."
Please make sure you have completed a computer check-in with your homeroom students by Wednesday of this week. Please, have your students sit their Chromebook on their desks and walk around and spot check these. If students have computer issues, please log a ticket so these can begin to be fixed ASAP. We do not want to get into a situation with the 2nd Round of Check-ins right around the corner and have broken devices. Also, please ask students if they have their chargers. If they do not have a charger, please make a note of this so that we can order more and have them submit payment.
Please make sure to pass out lunch charges to your homeroom students. The current bill is $190 for the cafeteria. Remind students to pay these off ASAP.
Lastly, the gym and health classes are getting interrupted entirely too much for "student emergencies." As a reminder, Mrs. Higgs teaches six health classes daily. Mrs. Higgs is not a full-time nurse for BSMS. She is simply on standby for serious medical emergencies. Do not send students to her for things that can be easily handled in the classroom, or in the office. If you are unsure about the matter, please allow the student to call home. Also, please make sure you are handling all accident reports for children under your care.
Academic Focus/PLCs
Thank you for assisting with coverage on Friday for the ELA data day. Now that the ELA teachers are caught up with the Math teachers in regard to their data day we can begin success plans for our bubble students. These students will be our focus for the remainder of the month in plcs.
ELA and Math teachers will meet with every student during the month of January and discuss their EOG data cards with them. We are all about growth of 5 to 10 points on the EOG.
This week the administration will be with you for plcs only on Thursday. You will spend the first part of your plc observing the teacher you chose at the huddle on Friday. Please report to their classroom for the first 15 minutes of your plc. When you return to plcs, please bring the reflection that I have provided for you to complete on the Google Classroom. You will have an opportunity to meet with your colleague and share your reflection during the huddle on Friday morning.
Over the next few months, I plan to use Teach Like a Champion and other resources in our plcs to discuss instructional practices that will make instruction meaningful at BSMS. Last week, we started with the "No Opt Out" technique. However, several groups did not have an opportunity to discuss this, so those groups will continue with this on Thursday. The article has been posted to the Google Classroom. Please be prepared to discuss this technique on Thursday. If you were able to discuss the article last week, please be prepared to reflect on how this is going in your classroom.
This week's technique is called "Right is Right." You will have time to review this in plcs.

Moving into 2nd Semester........
As we move into January, we have a lot of work to do to move the academic needle schoolwide. In order to do this, lesson plans must be well planned and turned in on time, classroom discipline must be consistent and tight, phone calls to parents must be made weekly, staff attendance must be consistent, student engagement in lessons should be present, and everyone must be working as a team! We have had a very successful fall semester and I am confident that the second semester will be just as successful. To keep the momentum, please bring your "A" game everyday. Take some time to discuss as a team what worked well in the first semester and what needs to be a focus moving forward. The administration is here to help in any way we can! In order to assist with this process, I want to meet with all grade-level teams this week to do a "reset". We will discuss times in team meetings. I have attached the PBIS matrix for you to use to reteach behaviors.
