UNL Mock Livestock Judging Contest
On alternating years, the University of Nebraska hosts a mock livestock judging contest for collegiate teams preparing for the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The contest will be held on January 7, 2018, at the Animal Science Complex on East Campus.
We are excited to invite and 4-H or FFA teams that would like some extra practice to attend. The contest will consist of 12 classes of cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats. We will designate at least 3 of these classes as reasons classes for 4-H and FFA youth and have collegiate judging coaches available to give reasons to and receive feedback from. The cost to enter is $10/student and simply covers the cost of lunch.
A registration form is found at https://go.unl.edu/qpu5 and is due January 1, 2018. Also found in this folder is information regarding a workout with the Wisner-Pilger FFA chapter on Saturday prior to the mock contest.

Ag Innovators Opportunity
In 2018, 5,000 youth from across these states will participate in the “Monarch on the Move Challenge”, an educational activity focusing on the importance of biodiversity to agriculture, specifically as related to monarch butterfly habitats. The Monarch on the Move Challenge will engage youth as researchers as they simulate the needs of a caterpillar identifying the many factors that play a role in their reproduction and survival. Then, using given land plot samples, teams will design effective agricultural practices that promote biodiversity. Teams will be challenged to provide evidence to support their strategies. When possible, learning venues will engage participants in a seed planting, exemplifying how everyone can contribute to biodiversity which, ultimately, helps secure food production for a growing world population.
In Nebraska, we are looking for 20 teens (we can take more) to help us teach this program across the state to reach our state goal of 1000 youth. Let Megan or Tanya know if you would like to participate!
Volunteer Opportunities for FIRST LEGO League
Have you heard of FIRST LEGO League? FIRST LEGO League introduces students in Grades 4-8 to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FIRST LEGO League teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.
The FIRST LEGO League program is well underway for the 2017-2018 "HYDRO DYNAMICS” Season. In this season’s challenge, the human water cycle describes the ways people find, transport, use, and dispose of water in order to meet a specific need or desire.
For the Project teams will need to:
- Identify a problem within the human water cycle.
- Design a solution that makes this problem better.
- Share the problem and solution with others.
So are you interested? Because we would love to have you volunteer for one of our events! More information can be found at https://4h.unl.edu/first-robotics/volunteer.
