Proud Military Brat
I know virtually all sides of the military affiliated family. I am what we affectionately call a “military brat” as my father was in the military and I was a kid in a military household. I grew up all over and went to many different Department of Defense schools overseas. I know what it is like to not have a parent around because they are TDY or deployed somewhere. I learned early on to fend for myself. I know what it is like to be active duty, to be a military member myself, to wear the uniform, to serve in combat, to deploy and just not be able to spend time with my family. I also know what it is like to be a mother of a “military brat” and to watch my son being uprooted constantly and to see the look in his eyes when I told him I couldn’t be there to attend a game or an event. Military children are strong and resilient. They make many sacrifices. However, out of those sacrifices, comes character, perseverance, flexibility; all traits that the best employers seek. Military children turn challenges into opportunity and give of themselves to help others. Be bold, remember to step outside your comfort zone. Sure, it is nice there, but you cannot grow or develop personally or professionally while you are there, nothing grows in the comfort zone. While it is difficult and downright hard to get through the tough times when our active duty family members are deployed, TDY or cannot even say where they are, remember who you are. You are a “military brat” and you can get through anything. You already have.
