Two Very Different Programs

North Star Academy offers Project Based Learning and Online Learning

BEYOND PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Our Beyond Program is launching into its 4th year for the 22-23 school year. This year we will have our first graduating class! The Beyond Program is Project Based Learning boasting smaller class sizes, relevant learning and cooperative learning. We focus on developing students' 21st Century Skills of creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Furthermore, students will learn some important life skills such as nutrition, cooking, personal financial literacy, gardening, computer science, and basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting. Our teachers are passionate about fostering positive relationships with students and families and providing engaging real-life lessons for students.

North Star Academy has a diverse student population and is inclusive to ALL students.

Students work on a digital device through a program called Edmentum. Students have the flexibility of time and place. They can work when they want and where they want. Certified teachers are available to help students in-person, or via zoom, phone, or email.

North Star Academy accepts students all throughout the year and the application is available on the North Star Academy website.

More about North Star Academy Beyond?

After interviewing students for over a year, we decided the students of Tulsa deserve a different alternative. We grounded our beliefs in four anchors.

1. Learning Beyond the Walls : we will extend our Project Based Learning into our school community to have a real– world social impact.

2. Personalization: students will drive the learning process toward competencies that extend beyond academic content.

3. Meaning Relationships: we will provide a supportive network of adults with life coaching training to ensure success in the whole student.

These three anchors drive North Star Academy.

Who is Right for NSA?

¨ Students who need freedom from the social pressure of high school.

¨ Students who want to minimize exposure to negative interactions.

¨ Students who want supportive relationships with adults and peers.

¨ Students who enjoy hands-on, collaborative, interactive learning projects.

¨ Students who prefer smaller class sizes.

¨ Students who enjoy learning outside the walls of school.

¨ Students who need an abbreviated day at school.

Our Graduate Profile

Meaningful Contributors: in Tulsa and beyond: We earn respect and give respect. We lead with love and compassion for others. We accept that what we do impacts our neighborhood, country and world. We take this responsibility with us wherever we go.

Resourceful learners: in a rapidly changing world: We learn how to learn and we use that skill to tackle school and life. We know that lasting success comes from collaboration, so we work to understand ourselves and others. We strive for success, learn from failure, and in all cases, persist. We thrive, even in uncertainty, because opportunity and challenge go hand-in-hand.

Designers of our own life journey: We understand and draw confidence from our identity and worth. We tackle problems and create our own solutions. We take ownership of our life, advocate for ourselves, and follow our imagination. Life is full of surprises, so we are firm in our goals but flexible in our plans.

Insights from our 18-19 Design Process

We spoke to many students across the district from many different schools. These interviews led us to three important insights.

Balance between work and out-of-school life: When not at school, students were responsible for working, taking care of siblings, etc. Students struggle to balance school and life.

Community: Students appreciate the coaching relationships formed and with teachers but still struggle to form stronger relationships with peers. Students like the flexibility of working remotely, but want to feel connected to a broader school community.

Tangible Education: Students want our learning to prepare them to transition into adult life (e.g financial planning, taxes, legal responsibilities, etc.)

Teachers as Coaches: Students need coaching through the academic and real-world challenges that matter to them most.

These insights helped us create a new school FOR students!

Student Schedules
