Assuring learning excellence and readiness for a changing world.

Can't Wait for Next Week!

We are so excited to welcome students and staff back to West High School! It has been almost 6 months since we have been "in school."

Remember Scarlets, mask up, stay socially distant, and wash your hands. The more we all do this, the closer we will get to school being "back to normal."

I want to thank our teachers for all of their work this week. They have been working so hard to prepare for our students' return. They have been busy creating rigorous online courses in Moodle to ensure all students can engage in a high levels of learning, whether we are in person, hybrid, or distance learning. They also understand that we are welcoming students who have experienced a summer like no other. Teachers chose this profession to teach kids. They teach content, but the connections they make, and the love and care they provide, are the core of everything they do.

Daily Home Screening for Students

Please complete the student screening each morning and report your child’s information to the school nurse if they have any of the following symptoms.

MAPS COVID-19 Student Screening

Mankato Area Public Schools (MAPS) is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all our students, staff and the community we serve. To ensure that, the following COVID-19 Preparedness Plan was developed to provide guidance to mitigate the potential for transmission of COVID-19 in our workplaces and communities.

Tuesday, Freshmen Orientation Day

On Tuesday, September 8, we will welcome the Class of 2024 to West High School. Below is information on how students will engage in learning based upon their learning plan.

Students in the Safe Learning Plan (Group A, Group B & Group C) will be on campus for Freshmen Orientation. Students should bring their chromebook with them to school as it will be needed during the day. Students will report directly to their Scarlet Squad room, which can be found at the bottom of their schedule listed under "ACT".

Our Link Crew has planned this special orientation day for our Freshmen. Students will work through a rotation of activities, including a 9th grade class meeting, time with their counselor, a practice run through their 7 period day, a pepfest in the gym, and time with their Link Crew leader.

Students in the Distance Learning Plan (Always Virtual) will receive an email on Tuesday, September 8 with information they can engage with for a virtual Freshmen Orientation. Students may join in real time at 10:20 am for a Class Meeting and again at 1:40 pm for a Naviance Lesson through the Google Calendar invite that is linked to a Google Meet. An alternative option will be to view the recorded version of these presentations, which will be emailed to our Distance Learning Plan (Always Virtual) students.

Distance Learning Only Students

Tuesday will also be a pick up day for materials for Distance Learning Only students. Please drive up to door #19 any time between 9:30am and 3:30pm to pick up any textbooks you may need, your school ID, a yearbook (if you ordered one last year), and any other materials your teachers may want you to have.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Wednesday, all students in Group A will attend school, Thursday, Group B, and Friday, Group C. Each group will start with their Scarlet Squad (room number and teacher located at the bottom of their schedule under "ACT").

In their Scarlet Squad room, students will receive their student IDs, bus passes, textbooks, parking passes, and yearbooks (if they ordered one last year). They will also engage in activities to welcome them back to school, understand how school is going to work this year, and getting to know the teacher and students in their Scarlet Squad.

After their Scarlet Squad time, students will go to their 1st hour class.

Moodle Information

Mankato Area Public Schools High Schools will be using Moodle as our Learning Management System for the 20-21 academic year. Moodle is a learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust, secure and integrated system to create personalized learning environments. This decision comes in response to feedback from students, families, and staff who spoke of a need for one place for students to access their online learning in distance and hybrid environments moving forward.

All students, in-person, hybrid and distance learners, will use Moodle. Here is a guide to help students and families navigate Moodle.

Students Who Ride the Bus

Students who have registered to ride the bus received an email on September 3rd with information on their bus number, the time and location of pick up. They will receive their bus passes on their first day in the building.

Parking Permits

Students who would like a permit need to fill out this form. The permits will be given during the first week of school to those students who register.

We Care

We care for all of our Scarlets. This is going to be a school year like no other. There will be things we will learn together along the way, and I do believe there will be good things that will come from this unique experience.

Please remember, the more we mask up, socially distance, and wash our hands, our chances of returning to a "normal" school year increase. We all need to do our part, as we are all in this together.

If you have questions, please feel free to email me, sblasi1@isd77.org, or give us a call at 387-3461.
